Hong Kong defeats Netherlands in World Twenty20 Qualifier warm-up match

Hong Kong won tight contest against an in-form Netherlands in a warm-up match at Edinburgh for the World Twenty20 Qualifiers, which is due to begin July 9. Netherlands, fresh from a series victory against Nepal in a four-match T20I series in their own country, were bowled out for 104 in the 20th over, chasing 114 for victory.

For Netherlands, only five batsmen scored in double figures, and no one went past 22, which was scored by their captain Peter Borren. After losing their first wicket without a run on the board, opener Michael Swart and No.3 Ben Cooper put on 31, but then they suffered a collapse, slumping to 46 for 5. Borren and Pieter Seelar stabilised the innings for a brief bit, keeping their side in the hunt, but Borren’s run-out catalysed another collapse, that featured five wickets for 19 runs. Tanwir Afzal and Anas Khan were the chief wicket-takers, taking three each.

Hong Kong’s batsmen also put up little resistance, besides a 44-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Mark Chapman and Babar Hayat. The last five wickets fell for just 20 runs, as they were restricted for a seemingly below-par 113 for nine. Ahsan Malik and Timm van der Gugten were the two most successful bowlers for Netherlands; they shared five wickets between them.
