Dave Richardson, International Cricket Council (ICC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) feels that South Africa are not “chokers” like they have been referred to over the years for not performing well in the big games. South Africa have lost games in the 1992, 1999, 2003 and 2007 editions of the World Cups after being in a winning position and have ever since been tagged with that word. “Though it doesn’t really hurt me when people call South Africa chokers, I think choking is actually a misnomer and not just in context of South Africa but in relation to any other team too. I don’t think South Africa have choked whenever they have lost big games. Instead, it is a plain and simple case of the opposition having played better on the day,” said Richardson, as reported by mid-day. “Though I think this is one of the most open World Cups in some time, I believe that this South African team, under AB (de Villiers) is a good, well balanced outfit,” added Richardson. Ruchardson made headlines recently when he said that there will be only 10 teams playing in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 in England, giving very less room for minnows like Ireland, Afghanistan and Scotland to enter the mega event and has faced a lot of flak for that.
