ICC rankings: Kane Williamson set to displace Virat Kohli as No 1 Test batsman

India captain Virat Kohli‘s reign as the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket is set to end with New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson poised to become the new No 1.

The latest reshuffle of the ICC rankings for Test batsman has put Williamson on 897 ratings points – the highest by any New Zealand player ever – after he scored 200 not out in the first Test against Bangladesh in Hamilton over the weekend. Kohli is No 1 with 922 points, but with New Zealand playing two Tests against Bangladesh, Williamson is set to topple him.

Williamson’s maiden Test double-hundred came in a record New Zealand total of 715/6 declared at Seddon Park, the first time the team reached 700.

Williamson was briefly the top-ranked Test batsman in 2015.

In August 2018, Kohli became No 1 in Tests following his 149 against England at Edbgaston.

scores of 97 and 103 in India’s 203-run win over England at Trent Bridge. He consolidated the top spot in December with 123 in Perth.

India next play Tests after the World Cup, in the West Indies in July.
