Brendon McCullum and Rob Nicol steadied New Zealand after the wicket of Martin Guptill against Sri Lanka in the first Super Eight match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2012 at Pallekele on Thursday.

Nicol and McCullum put on an unbeaten 32 runs for the second wicket as the Kiwis reached 80 for 1 at the end of 10 overs.

Nicol was batting on 25 off 21 deliveries, while McCullum was unbeaten on 14.

Earlier, Sri Lanka struck back after New Zealand openers stitched a half-century run stand

Nicol and Guptill got New Zealand off to a steady start after captain Ross Taylor won the toss and opted to bat.
