The ICC Under-19 World Cup 2016 will kick start from January 27 to February 14 across four cities in Bangladesh. before the tournament gets underway, there will be a few warm-up matches played between January 22 to January 25. South Africa are the defending champions and will begin their title defence against the hosts Bangladesh at Chittagong. This is a tournament, which will produce a lot of future stars. Players like Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and other players made a mark in the under-19 days before bursting into international cricket. According to the ICC media release, 16 sides have been equally divided into four groups of four each, with the top two from each group progressing to the Super League stage and the bottom two to feature in the Plate Championship. Apart from the 10 Test playing countries, six Associate and Affiliate Member sides Afghanistan, Canada, Fiji, Namibia, Nepal and Scotland will also participate after winning the various regional qualifying events. The Australian Under-19 side have pulled out of the World Cup citing security reasons. Their senior side too did not tour Bangladesh earlier in 2015 citing the same reason and as a result Ireland Under-19 tram have decided to send their side for the mega event as their replacement.

Bangladesh Test skipper Mushfiqur rahim stated that the Under-19 stage is like a dress rehearsal for the senior level. Mushfiqur represented Bangladesh in the tournament way back in 2006 and he says that it prepared him for the international stage.
