On Monday, ICC chairman Jay Shah described the return of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to India as a “defining moment” for women’s cricket. He emphasized that the governing body remains open to new ideas and is commited to sustaining the sport’s upward momentum.
India legends Mithali Raj and Yuvraj Singh joined current stars Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, and Jemimah Rodrigues at the ’50 Days to Go’ event in Mumbai, making the countdown to the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025.
India hosted the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2016, and has previouslystaged the Women’s World Cup in 1978, 1997, and 2013. The upcoming 50-over World Cup will be the first senior ICC Women’s tournament in the subcontinent since 2016.
ICC Chairman Jay Shah opened the event, which was followed by panel discussions featuring past and current stars of Indian cricket.
Speaking at the event as quoted by ICC, Shah said, “The return of the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025 to India comes at a defining moment for the women’s game, setting the stage for a truly world-class tournament that will further elevate the sport’s global stature.
“At the ICC, we remain open to new ideas and are constantly exploring ways to sustain the upward momentum of women’s cricket. Conversations like today’s panel discussion are invaluable in shaping our collective vision and driving progress.”
“With just 50 days to go until the start of the tournament, preparations are well underway, and excitement is building. I extend my best wishes to all participating teams as they gear up for the challenge. I am confident they will have an unforgettable experience in India and Sri Lanka,” he concluded.
The event also kicked off the official ICC Trophy Tour, starting in Mumbai and travelling to all tournament host cities, including Delhi. As part of a larger school legacy program, each host city will welcome multiple schools during the tour. The BCCI and ICC will collaborate with stakeholders to offer selected schools the opportunity to attend World Cup matches.
India will face Sri Lanka in Bengaluru in the opening match of the tournament, which runs from September 30 to November 2.
