ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier 2017: South Africa thrash PNG by 10 wickets

A ruthless performance by the bowling unit saw them set up a 10-wicket victory for the Momentum Proteas women in their last Group B match against Papua New Guinea (PNG) at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground in Colombo on Monday. South Africa, who have already qualified for the Super Six stage of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier tournament ended the group stage on top of the log with four points. They, along with India who top the Group A log are the only unbeaten teams in the tournament so far. PNG, who won the toss and elected to bat first, were skittled out for 76 runs in 32.4 overs thanks to an implacable South African bowling attack. Shabnim Ismail and Suné Luus were relentless, both returning figures of 2/13 in 6.4 and five overs respectively. Ismail was named Player of the Match for the second, consecutive time. Laura Wolvaardt led the batting reply, hitting an unbeaten 43 from 52 deliveries with opening partner, Lara Goodall (28*). They batted at just over five and a-half runs an over to reach their target with a little over 35 overs to spare.

South Africa are joined in the Super Six stage by India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Ireland and Bangladesh. All six teams have retained their One-Day International status for the next four-year cycle by virtue of qualifying for this next round of the tournament.
