Afghanistan and Zimbabwe lock horns in the 9th match, First Round Group B of the ICC World T20 2016 at Nagpur. In a must-win game for both the teams, Afghanistan won the toss and elected to bat first. Afghanistan batsmen made their intention clear: see the ball, hit the ball! Mohammad Shahzad and Noor Ali Zadran fired on all the cylinders right from the word go. Shahzad took on the Zimbabwe bowlers and hit four consecutive 4s off Chatara’s over and three of Tripano’s over; he plundered 23-ball 40 runs, including seven fours and one six.

Before the end of batting Powerplay, Zimbabwe bowlers managed to take two wickets. However, Afghanistan’s strike-rate after the batting Powerplay scaled upto 9.16. Zimbabwe then pulled back things and put a lid on the runs, as Panyangara scalped two wickets in the 8th over. After 10 overs Zimbabwe were 73 for 4. It was upto Samiullah Shenwari and Mohammad Nabi to take Afghanistan to a respectable total. It was after the 15thover both batsmen found their feat. Shenwari spanked two 6s and 4 off Wellington Masakadza’s over. Shenwari and Nabi stictched 98-run partnership for the 5th wicket before Shenwari got out on 43. It was then all the onus on Nabi to end the innings with a flourish. Nabi brought up his fifty off 30 balls and set up 187-run target for Zimbabwe.

Brief scores:

Afghanistan 186 for 6 (Mohammad Shahzad 40, Samiullah Shenwari 43, Mohammad Nabi 52; Panyangara 4 for 32, Sean Williams 1 for 25) vs Zimbabwe.
