India crushed South Africa by 203 runs in the first Test of a three-match series in Visakhapatnam on Sunday to take 1-0 lead. Chasing a massive 395-run target, the tourists collapsed to 70/8, losing seven wickets inside the morning session itself.

However the lower-order pair of Dane Piedt (56) and Senuran Muthusamy (49*) added 91 runs for the ninth wicket to spare them the blushes of being bowled out under 100. They took the Test to the second session and continued to frustrate India before Mohammed Shami completed a five-wicket haul with the scalps of Piedt and Kagiso Rabada to have them bowled out for 191 in 63.5 overs

The win, India’s third straight since the beginning of ICC World Test Championships, saw the hosts collect 40 points to extend their tally to 160 points. They have widened the gap with second-placed New Zealand who, with one win and loss, have 60 points from two matches followed by Sri Lanka (60), Australia (56) and England (56) to complete the top-five.

South Africa, who were playing their first match of the championship, have entered at sixth spot.
