Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chief and the country’s Interior Minister, walked away with the Asia Cup trophy after India refused to accept it. Following India’s victory, Naqvi, whose X account is blocked in India, responded to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s congratulatory tweet on the microblogging platform, claiming that India defiled the spirit of the game. “If war was your measure of pride, history already records your humiliating defeats at Pakistan’s hands. No cricket match can rewrite that truth. Dragging war into sport only exposes desperation and disgraces the very spirit of the game,” said Naqvi.

Earlier PM Modi applauded India’s famous win saying, “Operation Sindoor on the games field. Outcome is the same – India wins! Congrats to our cricketers.”

Naqvi’s statement reflect a misunderstanding of historical events. From 1971, when Lieutenant General A.A.K. Niazi, commander of Pakistani forces, signed the Instrument of Surrender to the Indian Army ending the war, to the Kargil conflict, during which former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif acknowlwdged Pakistan’s responsibility for breaching the Lahore declaration, history shows several key moments of accountability.

Operation Sindoor followed, during which Indian forces reportedly targeted multiple terror camps and carried out strikes on certain strategic locations across the border, including the Nur Khan airbase.

Meanwhile, on the field, India defeated Pakistan five times and won the Asia Cup final by five wickets in Dubai on Sunday.

In this backdrop, post-match presenter Simon Doull made announcement for the individual sponsors’ awards as it is mandatory to acknowledge the stakeholders and investors of the event.

Once the individual awards were given and the Pakistan team collected their prizes from Bangladesh Cricket Board president Aminul Islam Bulbul, Doull announced: “I have been informed by the Asian Cricket Council that the Indian cricket team will not be collecting their awards tonight. So that does conclude the post-match presentation.”
