Imran Khan, the legendary Pakistan cricketer, was sentenced to 14 years in jail in the Toshakhana reference case on Wednesday, January 31. The 71-year-old was found guilty of failing to declare his revenues from selling presents while serving as Prime Minister for tax purposes. Bushra Bibi, Imran’s wife, has also been convicted and sentenced to 14 years in jail.

The former Pakistan captain has also been fined PKR 787 million (about US$2.9 million). Furthermore, his five-year prohibition on standing for political office has been extended to ten. Imran was previously sentenced to 10 years in prison on a separate offense, and he has been serving a three-year term since August 2023.

However, the prior sentence, which also involved selling state goods, which the court deemed corrupt, was eventually suspended, but Imran was not freed from prison. Meanwhile, as is customary in Pakistan, his 14-year sentence will run concurrently with his ten-year imprisonment.

Imran Khan’s party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI), which he also led to power in Pakistan’s recent general elections, voiced discontent with the proceedings, claiming that it “exposed a complete disregard of law by a trial court” and called it a fake trial that should be thrown out.
