IND vs ENG: Kuldeep Yadav’s Historic Spin Masterclass Decimates England in 5th Test

It was historic day for Ravichandran Ashwin of India and Jonny Bairstow of England. After all, this was their hundredth Test match. And both of them had an equal potential to have an instant impression. They may still deliver a match-winning performance in the second innings; Ashwin, for example, did not even have to wait that long. He cleaned off England’s tail – But Kuldeep Yadav was unquestionably the star of Day 1 of India’s fifth Test against England.

Kuldeep ripped through England’s top order in the opening two sessions, putting on a spectacle that would impress even the finest wrist spinners. The first few wickets were a bit of a gift. Ben Duckett sprinted down the wicket and blasted across the line, only to receive a top edge that Shubman Gill caught racing backwards.

Kuldeep saved his best for the second session. He became the fastest Indian bowler and spinner in the recent century to take 50 Test wickets. He took just 1871 balls to reach 50 Test wickets. In terms of matches played, he was tied for sixth quickest Indian with Subhash Gupte, Erapalli Prasanna, and Axar Patel.

He also became only the third left-arm spinner, and the first from India, to take more than 50 Test wickets. The other two are South African Paul Adams and Englishman Johnny Wardle.
Kuldeep might have dismissed Zak Crawley (79 off 108) on the second ball of the day, but India opted for a catch instead than using DRS.

The 29-year-old spinner didn’t have to wait long thereafter as he unleashed a delivery that turned massively from an imaginary fifth stump, dismantling the leg stump of the England opener. The combination of inward drift and sharp turn orchestrated Crawley’s dismissal.

Jonny Bairstow, also marking his 100th Test like Ashwin, exhibited considerable intent during his innings but failed to prolong his stay. Struggling to decipher Kuldeep’s variations like his fellow batsmen, he eventually succumbed to a faint edge off a deceptive googly.

Bairstow’s decision to review proved futile, echoing the misfortune of Joe Root and Ben Stokes, who similarly wasted reviews at 175 runs. Jadeja deceived Root with a straighter delivery, securing an lbw dismissal after narrowly evading the English batter’s outside edge in the preceding ball.

Stokes was Kuldeep’s fifth victim, who trapped the opposition captain in front with a googly. Kuldeep ended up bowling 10.3 overs throughout the session. This was Kuldeep’s fourth five-wicket haul in Test cricket.

Ashwin then cleaned off England’s tail, finishing with 4/51. England had 218 after deciding to bat.
