India have gone into tea on Day Five of the fourth Test at 160 for two at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG). India were left with 349 to chase after Australia declared overnight. On a tough surface, India batted with temperance and are perhaps looking for a draw. Murali Vijay has held the innings together and is unbeaten at tea.

India continues to play with caution for a major part of the session. Having resumed on 73 for one, India maintained a defensive approach and were going stably. Rohit Sharma’s innings was mixed as usual. While there were a few fluent strokes, he also played and missed a few times. Ultimately, he played a poor shot on 39, guiding the ball to slip, where Steven Smith took a brilliant catch diving to his left.

That was perhaps one moment where Australia unleashed its fielding brilliance. They had a couple of forgettable moments in the field. Shaun Marsh dropped a relatively easy chance at cover when Vijay drove uppishly. A ball later, Ryan Harris threw the ball back at Vijay after he defended one. The ball hit the rough, bounced over Brad Haddin and went for four.

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli walked in and batted with his usual assured self, carrying his form into this innings. For a long time, India moved slowly. Once Vijay got to his fifty, he attacked Nathan Lyon, picking him for 16 runs in one of the overs, targetting the leg-side. India will resume the evening session needing 189 runs off 33 overs.

Australia 572 for 7 decl. (Chris Rogers 95, David Warner 101, Steven Smith 117, Shane Watson 81; Shaun Marsh 73, Joe Burns 58; Mohammed Shami 5 for 112) and 251 for 6 decl.
