With an unassailable 3-0 lead in the ongoing five-ODI series against Australia, Virat Kohli‘s India have toppled South Africa to become the No. 1 ranked side. After an emphatic 50-run win in the second ODI, India were tied with South Africa at 119 points, but missed out on the top spot by 0.09 decimal points. Nonetheless, a 5-wicket victory at Holkar Stadium in Indore, India have completed formalities and dethroned the Proteas. In this way, Kohli and co. have attained 9 ODI victories on the trot. Kohli goes past his previous best (8) and equals MS Dhoni’s tally of 9 wins as skipper.

India came to Indore with an aim to seal the series and attain the No. 1 rank, and achieved both. Opting to bat, Australia were off to a blistering start, courtesy Aaron Finch’s 8th hundred and fifty from Steven Smith. However, Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav pulled things back before Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah brought Australians on the mat. In the end, they managed 293 for 6. At one stage, Australia were 227 for 1.

In reply, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane added over 100 runs for the first wicket. India were cruising before quick wickets gave Australia an opening. Hardik Pandya weathered the storm with an entertaining 72-ball 78 and guided the ship.

India now have 12 successive wins across formats. They are unbeaten against Australia since the past 4 face-offs. At Holkar, India maintain a clean sheet by winning their 5th game.

Also, India have now become the numero uno side in both Tests and ODIs. However, they are ranked 5th in T20Is.
