Hello and welcome to CricketCountry’s live cricket blog and live cricket updates’ post of the first day’s play between India and the West Indies, at Sir Vivian Richards’ International Stadium in Antigua. This is the first of the four-Test series between the two teams with contrasting fortunes, and it will be interesting to see how the Indians fare in the hot conditions in the Caribbean against a relatively younger and inexperienced side. The contest is certainly a test for the new Indian leadership of Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble, who have been entrusted to take the Test team ahead, as they have a very busy season ahead. LIVE CRICKET SCORECARD: India vs West Indies 2016, 1st Test at Antigua

DAY 1 REPORT

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 302/4 in Overs 90 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 143 (197), Ravichandran Ashwin 22 (69): And that’s stumps! India end Day 1 in a commanding position and will look to pile on more misery on the West Indies on Day 2. Kohli is looking in excellent touch and is not far away from going past his highest Test score. Ashwin too has looked good and his partnership with Kohli was vital especially after India lost the wicket of Rahane early in the session.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 292/4 in Overs 84 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 136 (179), Ravichandran Ashwin 19 (51): West Indies have not taken the new ball. Seems like their quick bowlers are looking for some reverse swing and the spinners for some turn. Kohli and Ashwin have also brought up their 50-run stand, must to the frustration of the West Indies bowlers. These two will look to bat out the rest of the overs as well.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 278/4 in Overs 79 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 126 (167), Ravichandran Ashwin 15 (33): Kohli and Ashwin have consolidated extremely well and have a good partnership building. Ashwin has looked solid and has played a couple of good looking drives as well. West Indies will get the new ball after the 80th and will look to their fast bowlers to get them a breakthrough here.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 253/4 in Overs 71 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 108 (140), Ravichandran Ashwin 8 (12): India have lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane but the moment belongs to Virat Kohli as he has just slammed his 12th Test ton. It has been an incredibe innings by the Indian skipper and he will hope to stay on till the end of play today. To everyone’s surprise, Ravichandran Ashwin walks in after Rahane’s dismissal, ahead of Wriddhiman Saha. Rahane was Bishoo’s third wicket of the day. OUT! Ajinkya Rahane c Bravo b Bishoo 22 (36)

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 218/3 in Overs 64 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 83 (114), Ajinkya Rahane 20 (32): India have brought up their 200 and Virat Kohli is now into the 80s. Rahane at the other end too is scoring freely, easing the pressure on Kohli to a certain extent. West Indies need to break this partnership before it starts to threaten. Gabriel and Bishoo have been the most dangerous so far.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 197/3 in Overs 59 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 72 (100), Ajinkya Rahane 11 (16): After Shikhar Dhawan’s dismissal off the final ball before tea, it was Ajinkya Rahane, who walked out for India at No. 5. This is a crucial partnership for India as they have Wriddhiman Saha and the bowlers to follow. Kohli is looking excellent in this session as well and Rahane too has gotten off to a decent start.

So here we are! India looked in command with Kohli and Dhawan adding more than 100 runs for the third wicket, but the dismissal of Dhawan will pinch India a bit as he looked well-set for a deserving century. Now, post tea, Ajinkya Rahane will walk out to bat with the India captain, and the aim will be to add 100 more runs before the end of the play today to finish on a high. India do not have a great deal of batting left now, with Wriddhiman Saha and Ravichandran Ashwin already padded up since last few hours. Stay tuned, and here’s Kaustubh Mayekar’s tea report: Shikhar Dhawan falls for 84 at tea after century stand with Virat Kohli on Day 1, 1st Test vs West Indies

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 179/3 in Overs 54.5 | BATTING – Virat Kohli 64 (90): It’s been India’s session all the way though the West Indies began it with a wicket, and ended with another. Kohli and Dhawan pumelled the West Indies all around the park, adding more than 100 runs for the third wicket and putting India in a position of control. West Indies looked sapless, not pushing a great deal for wickets and even their fielding has been not impressive. But still, Dhawan went for another sweep on the penultimate ball of the last over before tea, and was trapped in front of the wickets! Bishoo gets another!

OUT! Shikhar Dhawan lbw Devendra Bishoo 84 (147)

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 173/2 in Overs 52 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 79 (132), Virat Kohli 64 (90): Easy pickings for India as boundaries are coming at regular intervals. Kohli has been batting from where he left months ago — the same fabulous cover drives are a delight to watch. From the other end, Dhawan looks set to complete his century sometime post the tea break. For the West Indies, a wicket here will be no less than blessing in disguise. Holder and Brathwaite in tandem, but they do not seem to be troubling the Indians much.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 157/2 in Overs 49 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 74 (126), Virat Kohli 54 (76): And there it is! Virat Kohli begins the Test carnival with a splendid, quick half-century, which is his 13th in Test cricket. He has batted with so much command that it is tough to believe it is the first game for him since the end of IPL!  Take a bow, champ!

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 137/2 in Overs 46 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 73 (124), Virat Kohli 35 (60): The partnership has surged past 60 right now, as both Dhawan and Kohli are batting freely at with a lot of command against the West Indies bowlers. The running between the wickets has been exemplary, and not surprisingly, Kohli has been pushing himself hard. Dhawan is keeping himself busy, playing the cuts quite well today.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 126/2 in Overs 41 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 68 (109), Virat Kohli 29 (45): This is only the seventh innings together for Dhawan and Kohli in Test cricket, but this pair continues to grow. The two batsmen have added more than 50 runs for the third wicket, with India finally getting a move on from the previous partnership, which gave India the solidity but not runs. Brathwaite and Bishoo are in operation at the moment.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 118/2 in Overs 38 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 67 (98), Virat Kohli 22 (38): Kohli has settled down nicely and is watching the ball real close, which indeed has helped his cause. Dhawan is as impressive as he has been today, punishing anything that is meant to be. These two have taken very less time to get close to the 50-run mark as a pair.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 103/2 in Overs 34 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 57 (88), Virat Kohli 18 (24): He may have taken his own time, curbed all his aggression but Dhawan has ensured that he gets to his third half-century in Test cricket. The left-handed batsman got to the mark having consumed 84 balls, and struck only 4 boundaries to show that he is intending to make some serious runs here.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, 87/2 in Overs 31 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 47 (80), Virat Kohli 12 (14): Virat Kohli has arrived the crease and it has not taken him much time to go past the long-awaited 3,000-run mark, which he brought up with a fine cover drive. He is looking positive early on, getting close to the ball and presenting the full bat.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 74/2 in Overs 28 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 46 (74), Virat Kohli 0 (2) : We spoke about West Indies not using Bishoo and the man has made a statement in his first over itself! Pujara has fallen while he was going for his shot on a lose, short ball, getting a leading edge and Kraigg Brathwaite doing the rest! Virat Kohli is in with India in slight trouble right into the second session.

OUT! Cheteshwar Pujara c Kraigg Brathwaite b Devendra Bishoo 16 (67)

A good session for India with Dhawan close to reaching a crucial half-century. He has applied himself well, but those four nasty bouncers from Shannon Gabriel exposed him nicely. A bit strange tactics from West Indies, as Gabriel was taken off the attack right after he got the only wicket of the session and Devendra Bishoo was not used at all. Stay tuned for the post-lunch session. Till then, here’s Kaustubh Mayekar’s lunch report: Shikhar Dhawan takes India to 72 for 1 vs West Indies at lunch

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 72/1 in Overs 27 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 46 (74), Cheteshwar Pujara 14 (63): And all of  a sudden, boundaries have started flowing in for India. Dhawan and Pujara have completed their 50-run stand for the second wicket, and they deserve all the pats on the back for showing grit and discipline to spend time at the wicket. Dhawan has batted really well, getting just one stroke away from a well-made half-century.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 56/1 in Overs 24 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 32 (61), Cheteshwar Pujara 12 (58): Chase has not had any success yet but his line and lengths have been terrific. He has been very disciplined, but whenever he has dropped anything short to Dhawan, the left-handed has played the cut shot really well. Runs coming easily for India at the moment, who have gone past the 50-run mark.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 44/1 in Overs 22 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 23 (56), Cheteshwar Pujara 10 (50): Gabriel has been called back at a time when both Dhawan and Pujara have dropped their anchors and have started scoring freely. There is still good amount of bounce and a little bit of turn on offer on this Day 1 wicket. Dhawan deserves special mention for curbing his aggressive instinct and looking to spend time at the wicket.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 32/1 in Overs 17 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 14 (38), Cheteshwar Pujara 7 (38): West Indies are persisting with Brathwaite and Chase as they keep looking for the second wicket. However, Pujara seems to have got his eye in and Dhawan does not look like throwing away his wicket anytime soon. We still have more than 30 minutes to go for the lunch break, and Indians would like to add a few runs here as their scoring so far against some ordinary bowling has been quite slow.

Yes, Virender Sehwag at his best and he pretty much sumps up everyone’s sentiments as well!

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 28/1 in Overs 12 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 12 (22), Cheteshwar Pujara 5 (24): Pujara and Dhawan have done quite well so far to help India recover from their loss. West Indies did the wrong thing by removing Gabriel, as the move got all the pressure off the Indians. Roston Chase’s off spin is being tried out now, let’s see if he makes a breakthrough in his debut spell.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 19/1 in Overs 9 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 7 (19), Cheteshwar Pujara 1 (9): And just when Gabriel had started firing and got a wicket, West Indies replaced him! Carlos Brathwaite has been introduced.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 14/1 in Overs 7 | BATTING – Shikhar Dhawan 6 (11), Cheteshwar Pujara 0 (4): Gabriel strikes! Vijay gets another snorter, a perfect short ball and he has been caught in the slips! India lose their first wicket! Cheteshwar Pujara has walked in, and he has been troubled by some raw pace here. Gabriel getting some good pace here.

Murali Vijay c Kraigg Brathwaite b Shannon Gabriel 7 (26)

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 11/0 in Overs 5 | BATTING – Murali Vijay 6 (19), Shikhar Dhawan 6 (11): Gabriel gets Dhawan OUT almost twice but there was no one to catch — two nasty short balls and the left-hander failed to keep them down. An appeal for caught behind, but the ball had brushed the thigh pads. Once again, Dhawan fails to keep a short ball down and once again there was a short ball. Vijay given a snorter too! Gabriel finally finding some rhythm.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 11/0 in Overs 4 | BATTING – Murali Vijay 6 (18), Shikhar Dhawan 5 (6): Holder gets decent bounce off the deck in the fourth over. He gets the ball to move away, and perhaps he is trying to get an edge inviting the batsmen to drive. And he is bowling pretty straight as well.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 11/0 in Overs 3 | BATTING – Murali Vijay 6 (12), Shikhar Dhawan 5 (6): Gabriel is bowling all over the place: full, short and wide. Vijay slams his first boundary, between gully and point. Dhawan gets a gift on the leg side, but fails to connect.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 6/0 in Overs 2 | BATTING – Murali Vijay 1 (7), Shikhar Dhawan 5 (5): West Indies captain into the attack with the new Dukes ball. First delivery is angled across Dhawan, who offers no stroke. First run for India, Dhawan leans forward to defend with soft hands and steals a quick run. Vijay is off the mark too, dabs on the off side for a single. And a FOUR! The final ball is short, and Dhawan pulls nicely for the first boundary of the series.

As expected, the stadium seems pretty empty.

LIVE CRICKET SCORES & UPDATES, INDIA 0/0 in Overs 1 | BATTING – Murali Vijay 0 (6), Shikhar Dhawan 0 (0): Gabriel begins with a fuller ball outside off, Vijay lets it go to the wicketkeeper. The second ball is a tad short, Vijay leaves this one too. The third ball is a ripper; Vijay comes forward to defend but is beaten! The next is left alone too, Vijay being watchful here. The penultimate ball is on the good length, Vijay leans forward to defend but is beaten again. Final ball left alone.

Indian openers Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay are out in the middle. Shannon Gabriel will open the attack for the West Indies. Here we go!

TOSS: India elect to bat first after winning the toss! 5 bowlers, 3 quicks and 2 spinners for India. Ravindra Jadeja is not playing. For the West Indies, ROSTON CHASE is making his debut!
