When Joe Root went for a wild sweep and lost his wicket in the first session of the final day, it was apparent that England were not employing the ploy of wearing out the Indian bowlers rather going for a declaration. There was more affirmation to this belief when England promoted Ben Stokes at No.4. England have now declared at 260 for 3, setting up a target of 310 for the hosts. Alastair Cook, who had brought up his 30th Test ton in the first session, completed 1,000 runs in India. He eventually perished for 130 while trying to hit Ravichandran Ashwin out of the ground for a six. Live Cricket Scorecard: India vs England 1st Test at Rajkot

India have just over a session and half to chase down the total and though there is a distant possibility of either sides winning, there is no apparent reason to believe that the Test is headed towards a draw. India began the post lunch session by attacking the leg-stump of the two left-handers, Cook and Stokes at the crease. Cook, who was finding it tough to get going with the slog sweeps, played an attractive inside-out shot over extra-cover for a boundary. The hit made Cook the fourth batsman after Clive Lloyd, Gordon Greenidge and Matthew Hayden to bring up 1,000 Test runs in India.

Cook is now tied at the 11th position in the list alongside Matthew Hayden and Shivnarine Chanderpaul in terms of most hundreds. This is his fifth Test ton in India. In fact, he now has 13 fifty-plus scores against this team. In 18 innings that he has batted in India, the English captain has now eight scores in excess of fifty. Cook now has most hundreds in India by a visiting batsman. Before this, along with Cook, Clive Lloyd, Everton Weekes and Hashim Amla had four hundreds in India to their name.

Stokes was in mood to hang around. The all-rounder, who struck a fine hundred in the first innings, punished leg-spinner Amit Mishra with three boundaries in the 71st over. While Mishra struggled against the left-handers, Ashwin targeted the leg-stump, getting the ball to spin in sharply.

Cook departed in the 76th over. In the post lunch session, England scored 49 in 9.3 overs. Stokes remained unbeaten on 29.

Earlier, England who ended Day Four at 114 for loss, began cautiously. Though Cook at times showed intent to up the scoring, debutant Haseeb Hameed was solid in his approach. Quite surprisingly, India brought in Mishra was brought one and half hours into the day s play. He was the only bowler to claim wickets this morning. This raises questions over Kohli s reluctance to use Mishra. Going back to Day One, Mishra had just bowled 10 overs in the entire day.

In the 57th over Pujara s brilliance almost had Hameed run out. Hameed shied away from the ball when Pujara threw it at stumps but he had his bat grounded. He has a reputation of loving to bat and it was apparent in his approach in this innings.

Hameed missed a Test hundred on debut as he was caught and bowled off Mishra s bowling. His fine knock ended at 82 and crowd from his home state of Gujarat (the state he originally hails from) appreciated the knock from the English teenager. Joe Root came in next and in bid to accelerate, lost his wicket giving Mishra another.

The England declaration has now made it a ODI-like scenario with India needing 310 to win in around 50 overs.
