Opener Devon Smith’s well-made half-century kept West Indies in hunt as they garnered 132 for the loss of two in 25 overs in reply to India’s 268. Smith, on 70, is at the crease with Ramnaresh Sarwan. West Indies need a further 137 runs in 25 overs with eight wickets in hand.

Smith was in sublime touch with the bat cutting and lofting the Indian bowlers with ease. He brought up his half-century in 63 balls hitting five boundaries and one over the fence.

Ravichandran Ashwin, playing his first World Cup match for India, struck in the seventh over to remove Kirk Edwards, as West Indies began their chase on a positive note making 46 runs in 10 overs for the loss of one wicket.

Edwards, on debut, was dismissed by a carom-ball from Ashwin. Umpire Steve Davis turned down the appeal initially, only to be reversed by the third umpire. This was the first time umpire Davis’ verdict was reversed in this World Cup.

Suresh Raina provided India the much-needed breakthrough in the 17th over dismissing Darren Bravo, just when he looked set for a big partnership with Devon Smith.

Earlier, India were bowled out for 268 in 49.1 overs with Yuvraj Singh hitting his first World Cup ton. Middle order batsman Virat Kohli impressed in his innings of 59, adding 122 with Yuvraj for the third wicket.

West Indies’ seamer Ravi Rampaul, included in the squad in place of pacer Kemar Roach, took career best of five for 51.

Brief Scores: India 268 all out in 49.1 overs (Yuvraj Singh 113, Virat Kohli 59; Ravi Rampaul 5 for 51, Andre Russell 2 for 49, Devendra Bishoo 1 for 48, Kieron Pollard 1 for 49) vs West Indies 132 for 2 in 25 overs (Devon Smith 70*, Darren Bravo 22; Suresh Raina 1 for 12, Ravichandran Ashwin 1 for 36).
