Yuvraj Singh bagged five wickets for 31 as Ireland were bowled out for 207 in their World Cup Group B match against India at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Â
He picked up the wickets of Andrew White, Kevin O’Brien, William Porterfield, John Mooney and Alex Cusack to cap a wonderful day with the ball.
Â
Ireland captain William Porterfield (75) led from the front with a solid half-century, which he brought up with a boundary to the cover region off Piyush Chawla as he and Nial OâBrien raised a superb century stand to keep the Ireland innings on a firm footing.
Â
Porterfield assured presence at the crease despite beaten on a few occasions by Zaheer and Munaf Patel early on. The Ireland captain carted Munaf through the covers for his first boundary. A pulled boundary off Zaheer gave him his second boundary. While on the other end, O’Brien brought up 1,000 runs in ODIs with a crunching cover drive off Zaheer.
Â
Earlier, Zaheer hit the straps straightway and almost had Porterfield when the batsman wafted at one that moved away but was dropped by Yusuf Pathan at second slip. Zaheer, however, didnât need help of any fielder off the next ball when he castled Paul Stirling with one that snaked through the bat-pad gate. Ireland were 1 for 1 in the first over.
Â
Zaheer made Mahendra Singh Dhoniâs decision to bowl first a justified one when he dismissed Ed Joyce with a delivery that nipped back taking an inside edge en route to wicketkeeper Dhoniâs gloves.
Â
Piyush Chawla made a poor beginning after overstepping in his third delivery of the 18th over which was pitched between the keeper and leg slip and raced away to the boundary. Porterfield made Chawlaâs cup of woes full off the next ball when he went down on one knee and swung him into the deep square-leg stands to bring up the 100th six of the World Cup. Chawla went on to concede 15 off his first over to allow Ireland gain momentum.
Â
After Niall OâBrien (46) was runout by Virat Kohli, Yuvraj coaxed the dangerous O’Brien into giving a simple return catch, while Porterfield (75) was caught at covers by Harbhajan Singh off a shoddy delivery. Mooney reviewed an lbw appeal, which went into favour of Yuvraj Singh. Andrew White was caught behind off Yuvraj Singh for five.
Â
Tailenders Trent Johnston and George Dockrell took Ireland past 200 in the 47th over six of the World Cup.
Â
Brief Scores: Ireland 207 all out in 47.5 overs (William Porterfield 75, Niall OâBrien 46; Yuvraj Singh 5 for 31, Zaheer Khan 3 for 30) vs India.
