Virat Kohli scored 49.84 per cent of India’s runs in the first innings of Centurion Test versus South Africa. Courtesy his 153, India  restricted South Africa‘s lead to only 28 runs. However, in pursuit of 287, India were left wanting following Kohli’s dismissal (5). They fell like nine pins to muster only 151, and lose by 135 runs. In addition, No. 1 ranked India also lost the three-match series against South Africa.

It is safe to say that whenever Kohli flops, India fail too. (For instance, 2015 World Cup semi-final versus Australia, and 2017 Champions Trophy final against Pakistan). His counterpart and South Africa skipper, Faf du Plessis pointed out that he believes ‘India are too reliant on Kohli to score runs.’

Further du Plessis added, “Everyone has chipped in (from South Africa’s perspective). AB de Villiers has scored runs, Dean Elgar, Aiden Markram, I’ve scored runs. Everyone has chipped in. We feel as an opposition that India is very reliant on Virat to score runs. So that’s the difference.”

India lost the series opener, at Cape Town, by 72 runs and conceded the second Test by 135 runs. Both sides will square off the the third and final Test from January 24 at Johannesburg.
