In what turned out to be a nail-biting finish India sealed a historic Test win in Adelaide on the fifth and final day against Australia. Led by a superb bowling effort from Jasprit Bumrah, India edged past the hosts by 31 runs to start an Australian Test series with a win for the first time in their cricketing history on Monday.

Chasing 323, a stubborn Australian lower-order defied India across two sessions before Ravichandran Ashwin landed the killer blow when he had last man Josh Hazlewood caught by KL Rahul at second slip. Australia were bowled out for 291 runs.

Kohli became the first Indian captain to record Tests win in South Africa, England and Australia in a calender year.

Overall, the contest made for a perfect advertisement for Test cricket with several current and former cricketers took to Twitter praising both the teams for producing an epic contest.

The second Test starts from Friday in Perth.
