The uncapped Victoria batsman Marcus Harris has been confirmed for a Test debut at Adelaide Oval on Thursday, slotting in as opening partner to Aaron Finch in Australia’s XI for the series opener against India. His state captain Peter Handscomb will play his first Test since April, taking the place of the allrounder Mitchell Marsh.

Australia’s bowling attack thus consists of the Ashes-winning quartet of pace bowlers Mitchell StarcJosh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins and record-breaking offspinner Nathan Lyon, with Travis Head’s part-time spin an option. The Adelaide Test against India will be the first time that Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins and Lyon will play a match together for Australia since the controversial Newlands Test match in March. Each bowler took at least 20 wickets during Australia’s 4-0 Ashes win over England before that.

The fit-again Usman Khawaja will bat at No 3, where he has played the majority of his 35 Tests.

After five rounds of the ongoing 2018-19 Sheffield Shield, Harris is the highest run-getter with 501 at 71.57 which includes three fifties and an unbeaten 250 against New South Wales.

Handscomb, 27, has been given a chance to add to his 13 Test caps since the ill-fated tour of South Africa in April where he was 12th man for the Newlands Test. His ability to play spin has tipped him into the Australian XI.
