After winning the toss in the first Test, England‘s Test skipper, Alastair Cook, looked itchy at the start with minimal foot movement at the crease and was dropped twice before falling for 21 off Ravindra Jadeja. England raced to 47 for no loss as Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav bowled their hearts out at the start of the first Test session but Indian slip fielders dropped both the openers thrice. If Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli missed chances from Cook’s blade, debutante Haseeb Hameed was reprieved at slips by Muralu Vijay. India will like to apply more pressure on England’s batting line-up with a set batsman, Hameed and No. 3 batsman, Joe Root at the crease. England have many left-handers and they will be wary of the threat posed by Ravichandran Ashwin who is destructive against left-handers.

England have come out with six bowlers with three seamers and spinners while India have elected to go with 5 bowlers, including three spinners. This is the first Test being hosted by Rajkot and is expected to be a batting friendly pitch on the first two days with the fourth innings being crucial for the batting side. The debutante from England’s side is right-handed opening batsman Hameed who becomes the 675th player to represent his country in Tests.
