The first day of first Test between India and England started with the toss, which Alastair Cook won and opted to bat first. England started decently with their new opening pair of Cook and debutant Haseeb Hameed. Both had 47-run stand for first wicket and thanks to butter fingers of Indian fielders at slips as they dropped three catches there. Cook was the first one to depart and it was spinner Ravindra Jadeja who drew the first blood. Further, Ashwin took the wicket of Hameed and soon their next batsman Ben Duckett also departed. Both added 179 runs for fourth wicket. In between, Root scored his maiden Test ton in Asia. His previous best was of 88 in the Indian subcontinent before this century. At one moment, both Root and Ali looked well set and were probably eyeing to continue their partnership to a huge one but thanks to Umesh Yadav, who sent Root back to pavilion. The most notable thing throughout the day one was how Indian spinners bowled. Be it Ashwin, Jadeja or Amit Mishra, none were impressive with their bowling as England kept scoring runs at a brisk rate.

The day one of this Test surely belonged to England. They ended up scoring 311 for the loss of four wickets only and this is first time a team scored above 300 against India in India since March 2013.
