Indian’s opening batsman Murali Vijay on Thursday goes past 3,000 runs in his Test career during the second game of their ongoing five-match series against England. The match is being played at Dr YS Rajasekhara Reddy ACA-VDCA Cricket Stadium, Visakhapatnam, and it also the first ever-Test at this venue. Vijay made his Test debut for India eight years ago in 2008 against Australia at Nagpur in place of Gautam Gambhir during the fourth Test of the series. He did not have dream debut, however, his scores of 33 and 41 respectively were impressive enough to keep him in contention as the next opening batsman for India in the Test arena. Before this Test, he needed 20 more runs to reach this landmark of 3,000 Test runs and without taking much time in the second game against England, Vijay achieved this feat. He becomes 20th Indian batsman to score 3,000 or more Test runs. The previous Indian player to enter this club was Virat Kohli. He took 44 Tests to reach this landmark with the average of above 40. In between he made seven hundreds and 14 fifties with the highest score of 167. After making his debut in 2008, it took two more years to cement his place in the Indian Test side.

His career turned in 2013, although he played mostly at home in that year and his biggest transformation came to witness during India’s tour of England in 2014. In the year 2014, Vijay scored 852 runs from 10 Tests at 42.60 and since then, his average has never gone down below 40. Currently, his is among the most important player of India’s Test side.
