Virat Kohli scored an unbeaten 72 as India registered their maiden T20I win over South Africa, winning the second Twenty20 international of the three-match series at the Punjab Cricket Association-IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali on Wednesday.

India chased down the 150-run target with seven wickets in hand and an over to spare to go 1-0 up in the series.

Kohli, who notched up his 22nd T20I fifty from 71 matches, now also have fifty-plus average in all the formats. The right-hander averages 53.14 in Test cricket and has scored his 11520 ODI runs at an average of 60.31.

With his 72 not out against the Quinton de Kock-led Proteas in Mohali, Kohli now averages 50.85 in the shortest format of the game.

Following Kohli’s match-winning knock, the International Cricket Council (ICC) tweeted, “Tests: 53.14 ODIs: 60.31 T20Is: 50.85 Virat Kohli once again averages over 50 in all three international formats 🤯”

Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi, quoting ICC’s tweet, lauded the Indian, saying: “Congratulations @imVkohli You are a great player indeed, wish you continued success, keep entertaining cricket fans all around the world.”

India will now square off against the visitors at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on September 22, Sunday. While South Africa will be eager to square the series, India will be keen to win the third and final T20I of the series to win the first series of the home season.
