India Women had to battle it out in the middle for runs against the formidable South Africa Women side in their Super Six tie in the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers 2017. The match at P Sara Oval in Colombo saw South Africa win the toss and inviting India to bat. South African pace-women gave their team a miserly start. For India, Mithali Raj (64) and Mona Meshram (55) batted with resolute to snitch up a 96-run stand for second wicket. Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail stifled Indian openers who only added 10 runs in the first 10 overs. Deepti Sharma and Mona Meshram batted with caution all throughout their stay. Deepti was the first casualty for India, who gave a simple catch to mid-on for 9. Skipper Mithali Raj came out in the middle hoping for an Indian revival. Mithali during her knock also crossed the 5,500 ODI run-mark; second only to Charlotte Edwards. The pair brought-up their 50-run stand from 83 balls.

Mona, who was scoring slow initially, thrashed a six over wide long-on to bring up her first ever ODI half-century. Mithali, not to be left behind, brought up her 47th half-century in 69-balls. Mona Meshram departed after making a 85-ball 55. In an attempt to heave Van Niekerk over covers, Mona managed to get her stumps rattled. This was also Dane van Niekerk’s 100 ODI wickets. She became the first South African woman to the mark.

Harmanpreet Kaur came out at No.4 to anchor alongside Mithali. Kaur could not do much damage, getting bowled for 7 off Marizanne Kapp. Veda Krishnamurthy came out to partner Mithali.

Indian skipper departed for 64 trying to smack the ball over the point region, only managing to give a simple catch to Lee. This was also Khaka’s second wicket. Veda too failed to make a difference, managing just 7 runs and handing pacer Ismail her first wicket of the match.

Devika Vaidya and Shikha Pandey added crucial runs in quick time, adding 29 runs for sixth wicket. Vaidya departed for 19 after she tried to slog Kapp over cover. New batswoman Sushma Verma was run out for 1.

Pandey added important 21 runs before getting run out on the final ball of the Indian innings.

India Women made two changes in their side bringing in Deepti and Shikha Pandey for Soni Yadav and Mansi Joshi. South Africa Women also made a couple to changes to their side as well. Lizelle Lee, Marizanne Kapp and Khaka came in for Sune Luus, Moseline Daniels and Lara Goodall.
