Jasprit Bumrah picked Niroshan Dickwella for 13 AFP

With change of captain, came change for fortune for Sri Lanka. Chamara Kapugedera won his first-ever toss as national captain and chose to bat first against India in the third One-Day International at Kandy. It was a familiar tormentor for the home side as Jasprit Bumrah rocked their top-order and continued to dent hopes in the death overs; hereby picking his maiden 5-wicket haul. Lahiru Thirimanne making his comeback in the Sri Lankan side played a sturdy knock of 80 runs to help them reach 217 for 9.

Strangely with Niroshan Dickwella walked out with Dinesh Chandimal in place of newly drafted Lahiru Thirimanne. Dickwella started in familiar fashion hitting quick boundaries. His leg-before decision was rightly overturned after DRS showed 2 green signals but departed two balls after.

This time it was Virat Kohli, who called for the DRS and had on-field umpire s decision changed. Jasprit Bumrah unlike second ODI looked in more control of the new-ball to get Dickwella for 13.

Kusal Mendis joined Chandimal in the third over itself. The pair played out quite a probing spell by Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar but were unable to withstand for long. Mendis playing away from his body edged one straight into the hands of a diving Rohit Sharma at second slip for 1 off Bumrah.

Regular opener Thirimanne came out at No.4. At the end of Powerplay, Kohli called for Yuzvendra Chahal and Hardik Pandya onto bowl. Pandya did managed to trouble Chandimal with his short-pitched stuff; one of his bouncers hit him on his right thumb (later it was revealed to be a hair-line fracture). Despite the hit, he and Thirimanne added 50 runs in 74 balls. In between this, Chandimal also surpassed 1,000 runs in ODIs at home.

Pandya did have the final laugh in the contest getting Chandimal s wicket for 36. Angelo Mathews joined Thirimanne in his quest of runs. He slammed his 17th half-century in 69 balls.

Mathews secured his 1,000th run against India and departed playing a poor shot. Kedar Jadhav, who was called into the attack to make a breakthrough, did the same in his second over to get Mathews leg before for 11.

Bumrah brought back into the attack got the important wicket of Thirimanne. Looking to chip Bumrah over mid-on he holed out just inside the circle to Jadhav for 80. Skipper Kapugedera departed for 14 trying to hoist Akshar Patel over the boundary line.

Bumrah picked his fourth scalp castling Akila Dananjaya for 2. With only 3 over left in the first innings rain decided to stop by and halt play for a few minutes.

Back after the break, Bumrah picked his maiden five-wicket haul cleaning Milinda Siriwardana for a 27-ball 29. Sri Lanka lost their 9th wicket after Dushmantha Chameera was run out by MS Dhoni.

Sri Lanka’s innings ended on 217 for 9 with Lasith Malinga and Vishwa Fernando not out on 1 and 5.
