Most in the cricket fraternity were not pleased when Murali Vijay did not make it to the playing XI in the Kolkata Test. Weren’t injured cricketers guaranteed a place back? Also, when the chips are down and conditions are tough, Vijay has this knack of thriving. Shikhar Dhawan’s absence in the Nagpur Test opened the gates for the Tamil Nadu opener and he marked a comeback with a classy 128, his tenth Test hundred.

Vijay will open at Delhi, and he hopes the green surface at Feroz Shah Kotla will provide India good experience for the South Africa tour.

It is a nice wicket to play. It has grass, that is the whole point. Hopefully, the wicket plays good and we get a good experience before the South Africa tour, Vijay told reporters ahead of the Delhi Test.

India’s opening choices

Dhawan is back in the squad and India are faced with a happy dilemma. Dhawan and Rahul have been in rich form, and Vijay has sealed his slot. Vijay assured the fact that not knowing his opening partner would not affect him.

We three are very good friends off the field. So it makes it much easier. Definitely, it is an opener playing in the regular. We three have good rapport off the field. So it definitely helps in the future as well, Vijay added.

Preparation for South Africa tour

I am trying to do something different in my practice, bring some fun, so it becomes more challenging for me and I try to become better each and every day.

We have been playing Test cricket for a while now. The same team members are stuck together. It is important to communicate and share knowledge with each other and these are things I look forward to because they are going to add more value. We should be clear ahead of what we are going to do.”

India lead 1-0 in the Test series. If Virat Kohli manages to win this series, he will equal the records held by Australia and England, who had won 9 Tests in a row.
