Ravichandran Ashwin gave India the first breakthrough dismissing Lahiru Thirimanne for 38. Thirimanne tried to work a ball on the leg-side covering the stumps and was out leg-before. It was the old action that fetched Ashwin a wicket. Sri Lanka are on 90 for one in 19 overs.

Sri Lanka had got off to a solid start scoring briskly even as the opening pacers got a lot of swing. Thirimanne and Perra did well to take some risks with Perera going for his shots in particular. He even pulled a Sanath Jayasuriya-like six into the squareleg stands.

Opener Kusal Perera was dropped twice while on seven and 38. In the first instance a collision between Ajinkya Rahane and Shikhar Dhawan helped him whereas on the other occasion he was caught by Ravindra Jadeja but the ball popped out of his hands as he fell to the ground.
