In a rain-marred match at Eden Gardens, India struggled against Sri Lankan fast bowlers. After removing openers KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan before a rain-forced tea break, Suranga Lakmal returned to dismiss Virat Kohli for a duck. Kohli asked for the DRS following a discussion with Cheteshwar Pujara, but the umpire s decision stayed put. At tea, Lakmal s figures read 6-6-0-3.Kohli had scored mere 167 runs in three-match Test series in Sri Lanka earlier this year.

Kohli also earned an unwanted record to his name by scoring his fifth duck in international cricket in a calendar year. Kapil Dev is the only other Indian captain to have registered 5 ducks in a calendar year: he had 4 in Tests and 1 in ODIs in 1983. This was Kohli’s second duck in Test cricket this year. His other duck came against Australia in Pune. Additionally, he has 2 ducks in ODIs and 1 in T20Is.

However, as a captain Kohli can improvise his records by sweeping Sri Lanka again by 3-0. If India whitewash against Sri Lanka, Kohli will surpass Sourav Ganguly s record of 21 Test wins as captain. MS Dhoni is on top of the list with 27 wins from 60 Tests.
