With that, we take your leave. Thank you for joining us in our coverage of the first T20. We’d like to see you back when these two teams face each other a day before diwali. Have a good night!

  • 10:24 PM IST

So there you have it, folks. India win the first of the three T20s. There were stutters but 110 was never going to be a sweat for India. In the end, it all boiled down to the experienced hands of Dinesh Karthik and some T20-like strokes from Krunal Pandya to see them through. A great outing for the debutant. Picked up the wicket of Pollard and followed it with a crucial 21 off nine balls.

  • 10:22 PM IST

That’s it. Victory is India’s. A boundary from Krunal Pandya followed by a double seals India’s win. They go 1-0 up with a five-wicket win at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

  • 10:10 PM IST

BOLD from Pandya: Debutant Krunal Pandya plays a reverse sweep for a boundary. India now need less than 20 runs and with Pandya and Karthik in the middle, this looks to be India’s game. This has been a measured innings from DK. India 94 for 5 after 16 overs.

  • 10:04 PM IST

OUT! And just when the partnership was beginning to flourish, West Indies have gotten themselves another. India 83 for 5. Manish Pandey falls to a soft dismissal by chipping the ball in the air for the bowler Khary Pierre to complete a return catch. First wicket for Pierre and he is delighted.

  • 9:52 PM IST

Pollard gives away easy runs. Dinesh Karthik cashes in on poor deliveries to give India 12 off Pollard’s first over. Just what India needed. They are 69 for 4 after 12 overs, need another 41 off 48.

  • 9:50 PM IST

    Ok then!

  • 9:42 PM IST

10 overs gone and India have moved to 54 for 4. This is surely closer than one would have imagined. Remember, only Krunal Pandya after this and then we are into the tail. This pair of Dinesh Karthik and Manish Pandey is crucial for India.

  • 9:33 PM IST

Another wicket: KL Rahul connects well but hits the ball straight to Darren Bravo at deep square leg. Second wicket in two overs for West Indies skipper Carlos Brathwaite. India lose their 4th wicket for 45. One more wicket and West Indies will surely fancy their chances of defending this low total.

  • 9:22 PM IST

OUT! Rishabh Pant goes for 1 to leave India at 35 for 3. And what a waste of a wicket this is from him. He goes for a heave towards the legside but top- edges it for a catch. Excellent from the West Indies with captain Brathwaite striking in his first over. They are not throwing in the towel just yet.

  • 9:15 PM IST

Five overs gone and India are 32 for 2. Well, the going hasn’t been easy with Oshane Thomas producing some serious pace, but he is done with three overs. KL Rahul has struck two boundaries and a four bye hasn’t helped either. Rishabh Pant has faced just two deliveries at the other end and India would look up to these two batsmen to spend some time.

  • 9:06 PM IST

BOWLED HIM: Oshane Thomas on a roll here as he cleans up Shikhar Dhawan for his second wicket. That was too quick and Dhawan had no clue. The ball goes through the big gap between bat and pad. India 16 for 2 in 2.5 overs. West Indies are surely in it.

  • 8:54 PM IST

OUT! What a start by West Indies. Debutant Oshane Thomas gets rid of Rohit Sharma for his first T20I wicket. India 7 for 1. Pace got the better of the India captain there. The ball took the inside edge of his bat for Ramdin to take the catch. It was originally given NOT OUT but West Indies took the review and the snicko showed a small movement.

  • 8:43 PM IST

Right then. How do you think this one will play? On current form, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan should chase it down, but stranger things have happened in cricket. Will tonight be one of those days? West Indies will surely hope so. Stay tuned, we will be back with the second innings shortly.

  • 8:42 PM IST

So there it is. West Indies finish on 109 for 8. Not the most intimidating score but they should be happy with the total considering they were 54 for 6. India were clinical with Kuldeep Yadav picking up 3 for 13 in his four. On top of that, there were maiden wickets for Krunal Pandya and Khaleel Ahmed too.

  • 8:27 PM IST

OUT: Fabian Allen falls after scoring crucial 27 runs on debut. And with that, Khaleel Ahmed picks up his maiden T20 wicket. Reward for some top-notch bowling. He has given away just 16 runs from 4 overs. West Indies 87 for 8.

  • 8:20 PM IST

KL Rahul is finding his return to the Indian team tough, at least in the outfield. He’s fumbled twice and conceeded two boundaries. West Indies 81 for 7. Three overs remain. How much more can they get? 100 should be their first target.

  • 8:12 PM IST

OUT: Kuldeep Yadav gets his third, West Indies 63 for 7. This is downright bad for the West Indies. They lose their captain Carlos Brathwaite out LBW. He thinks about the review but decides against it.

  • 8:07 PM IST

Fabian Allen has given West Indies their first boundary in 40 balls. Yeah, that’s how tough it has been for the T20 defending champions.

  • 8:03 PM IST

GONE: Oh dear. It’s almost as if a wicket is falling every over. Blink an eye and you’ll miss a wicket. Kuldeep gets Rovman Powell out caught behind to leave West Indies sinking at 56 for 6.

  • 7:59 PM IST

Just one run off the 12th over. India are all over West Indies at the moment at 54 for 5.

  • 7:56 PM IST

OUT: It’s absolute carnage. West Indies have lost half their side for 49 in the 11th over. Kuldeep Yadav bowls it full and Darren Bravo finds Shikhar Dhawan, who takes a fine running catch. Right now. Skipper Carlos Brathwaite is the new man. With almost half innings left, can he do something for his team?

  • 7:54 PM IST

OUT: That’s the moment Krunal Pandya was waiting for. He gets his first international wicket. And who does he dismiss? Yes, his Mumbai Indians teammate Kieron Pollard. Pandya pitches it full but Pollard doesn’t connect well and holes out to long-on.

  • 7:48 PM IST

Tidy first over from Kuldeep, just three runs off the ninth over. West Indies 47 for 3. Time to get a move on, boys.

  • 7:44 PM IST

Eight overs gone and West Indies are 44 for 3. Just 15 runs coming off the last three overs. Predicted score is 104, which surely West Indies won’t be satisfied with. Pollard has just tonked Krunal Pandya for a six in his first over. Those countless practice session for Mumbai Indians coming handy here for the Big Man.

  • 7:31 PM IST

OUT: Gone. Hetmyer goes to put West Indies in early trouble at 28 for 3. Four balls it took for Jasprit Bumrah to strike. He pitches it short and Hetmyer, going for a full-blooded pull, edges the ball and skies it in the air. Dinesh Karthik, the man with gloves, covers decent amount of ground and takes the catch safely. Five overs gone and India are on top.

  • 7:23 PM IST

And Khaleel Ahmed bowls a maiden over. YEAH, in a T20, against the World T20 Champions. The youngster continues to impress.

  • 7:23 PM IST

OUT: Terrible mix-up and West Indies lose their second wicket for 22. Shai Hope goes for 14. Both batsmen at the same end, trying to get their bats it. After Hope dabbed it on the leg side, KL Rahul picked up the ball and threw it the wicketkeeper.
It was a bad throw which Karthik missed, but Manish Pandey backed up well and took his time to remove the bail. After a long introspection, it was indeed Hope who has to go.

  • 7:16 PM IST

  • 7:16 PM IST

OUT: There it is. An early wicket for India. West Indies 16 for 1. Umesh Yadav bowls it a little outside off and Denesh Ramdin, trying to run it down to third man, pokes at it and edges it to Dinesh Karthik behind the stumps. After the first two overs had yielded 16 runs, India strike right back.
