India vs West Indies: Shreyas Iyer seeks flexibility even as he tries to cement India No.4 spot

Shreyas Iyer was disappointed with the abandonment for the first ODI, against West Indies at Guyana, that denied him an opportunity to bat at the No.4 spot for India and is hopeful he would get to bat in the next two games. However, India’s new No.4 is not really just focusing on that crucial batting spot in the line-up, instead the 24-year-old is seeking flexibility to bat anywhere the team wants him to bat.

“Personally, I am not thinking about batting only at No.4,” Iyer said ahead of the second ODI, at the Queen’s Park Oval in Port of Spain. “I want to be someone who is very flexible batting at any number, or, if you go into any situation, you should be able to grab that opportunity and make the best use of it.”

To the build up to the World Cup even though India tried quite few batsmen at the No.4 spot, Iyer, who has played 6 ODIs so far, got to bat at No.3 thrice and No.5 twice, never got the chance. And with the players who were given a go failing, it’s Iyer’s turn now as the Indian team management continues to find a solution. The Mumbai batsman, for his part, has done exceedingly well for India representatives sides to put forward a strong case, most recently for India A in the Caribbean, where he scored 187 runs in four outings, at an average of 62.33.

And Iyer concedes that he is eager to carry forward that momentum in the ODI series as well.

“It’s going to be another two opportunities for me to make the best use of,” Iyer said. “Hopefully, this also doesn’t rain off. We are hardly getting any net practice. I am eager to go out there and carry forward the momentum which I got from my India A matches. Looking forward to a good series finish, he added.

India take on West Indies in the 2nd ODI at Queen’s Park Oval, Port of Spain, Trinidad on Sunday. That match starts 7:00 pm IST.
