Settling in as captain for a successful franchise like Kolkata Knight Riders is never easy. Dinesh Karthik felt the heat when his side went down against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for the first time at Eden Gardens, Kolkata during ongoing VIVO IPL 2018. However, he has surely instilled fans’ faith following KKR’s demolition over Delhi Daredevils (DD) in match 13. What makes the victory more special for Karthik is that he got the better of his predecessor, Gautam Gambhir and spoiled the veteran’s homecoming at Eden (his 50th overall).

Following KKR’s 71-run victory over DD, Karthik was praised for his leadership due to his proactiveness and field placements. In the post-match conference, he explained how KKR had planned to get rid of DD’s vital cog, Shreyas Iyer. “We have done a bit of planning. It was a fantastic catch from Nitish Rana. Wins keep you happy and you are slowly there. Touchwood, this is the kind of the day, where you make a move and it works. Feel good as a captain,” told Karthik.

Karthik also lauded his wrist spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawla for vital breakthroughs. Sunil Naine, on the other hand, ended with 3 for 18 and attained the Purple Cap too. “Wrist spinners in IPL are picked for a certain purpose. We have three top quality spinners. They are standing up. It’s good to see,” pointed out Karthik.

Former India player and award ceremony presenter, Sanjay Manjrekar, asked Karthik to rate himself as captain. To this Karthik cross questioned with a smile. “You should tell me that (chuckles). It’s going well. You sleep with a lot of thoughts, you wake up with a lot of thoughts, something I’m getting used to. Need to balance those thoughts and try to separate batting from captaincy,” signed off the winning captain.
