Indian team management never asked for replacements for Shikhar Dhawan: BCCI official

While the news of wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant being asked to join the Indian squad in England for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 has been doing the rounds since yesterday, a BCCI official has told PTI that the Indian team management never asked for replacements for Shikhar Dhawan, who will be out of at least three India WC games due to a hairline fracture on his left thumb.

The official, under condition of anonymity, also stated that the news of Pant joining the squad are mere speculations. “The team management never asked for replacements. I don’t know from where the news of Rishabh Pant joining the squad was making rounds. It was speculation by the media,” the official told PTI.Dhawan, who sustained a thumb injury while batting against Australia, will be under observation, according to a statement released by the BCCI team management on Tuesday. “Team India opening batsman Mr Shikhar Dhawan is presently under the observation of the BCCI medical team. The team management has decided that Mr Dhawan will continue to be in England and his progress will be monitored,” said BCCI in a media release. “Mr Dhawan sustained an injury on the back of his left hand in the region between the index finger and thumb during the CWC 2019 league match against Australia,” added BCCI.

CricketCountry had earlier reported that that Dhawan has gone to Leeds for further assessment on extend of the injury and while there is still speculations on for how long Dhawan will be sidelined, it is confirmed that the 33-year-old will miss India’s next two games.

With Dhawan’s unavailability, India may be forced to change their successful opening combination. KL Rahul, India’s back-up opener up till the World Cup could be bumped up the order making way for either Vijay Shankar or Dinesh Karthik to fill in the No.4 slot.
