Delhi Daredevils player Roelof van der Merwe hinted that his team lacked a quality spinner which mostly comprises of a dominant pace attack. Delhi lost their fourth match of Indian Premier League this season against Chennai Super Kings on Saturday.

“We have got a lot of pace bowlers and that is how we prepare at home. You are always short of a world-class spinner and any team will take one,” said van der Merwe.

The South African all-rounder said, it s better for the team to reassess their strength after such losses rather than losing out in the playoffs. “It s never good to lose. We don t walk in the field to lose. But I think it s better to lose now than in the playoffs. When you lose, you learn more. Hopefully, it s our last loss in the tournament and we can get some momentum going into the playoffs,” he was quoted as saying by the official website of Indian Premier League (IPL).

Delhi Daredevils campaign has been led by a strong batting performance led by Virender Sehwag who has been ably supported by Mahle Jayawadene, Kevin Pietersen during the first half of the season and David Warner who joined the team recently.

However Delhi s performance has come apart whenever their star batting line-up has failed to deliver which made the team look too dependent on the batting at top. On Saturday Delhi lost their top four batsmen for just 24 runs on board which pegged them back against Chennai.

Van Der Merwe backed his team s batsmen saying, “They are in top form at the moment. We do rely on them, but batsmen can t always score runs, and unlucky for us, none of them scored runs tonight. That s a part of the game, and hopefully, they can score runs and get us back on track.”

Referring to their loss against Chennai van der Merwe said, “I think they played against our strength as we are too good with our batting. Hilfenahus swung the bowl up front with a good pace and bowled a very good spell tonight and that s why I think we lost.”

Despite the loss, Delhi Daredevils maintained their place at the top of the points table and look set to enter the playoffs stage with three more games remaining in the league phase, out of which two games are scheduled to be played at their home.
