An all-round performance on the field from the Chennai Super Kings enabled them to pick up their 11th win of the Indian Premier League 2013 when they completed a 33-run victory over toothless Delhi Daredevils. This win takes them back to the top of the table, ahead of the Mumbai Indians, with 22 points from 15 games.

Chasing 169, Delhi Daredevils’ batting followed a familiar downfall as they just did not seem to have the energy to take the fight to a dominant Chennai bowling attack. The visitors were rocked early in the innings by Mohit Sharma. He bowled a delivery slightly outside the off-stump to Virender Sehwag who edged it to MS Dhoni.

Lower-order batsman Johan Botha was promoted up the order, ahead of skipper David Warner to throw his bat around. However, Chennai bowlers gave very little width for him to do so. Three overs later, opener Unmukt Chand hit a six but found himself back in the dugout after failing to read a slower one from Sharma and a top-edge went straight to Holder in the deep. Warner walked out with Delhi at 34 for two in the fifth over. Botha was playing a few shots and looked like he could give a good stand to Warner until MS Dhoni brought Ravichandran Ashwin into the attack.

Ashwin bowled one outside the offstump and Botha went for the expansive sweep but top-edged it to Holder in the deep. This wicket brought Kedav Jadhav to the middle. However, his horror night continued as he perished in the eighth over while attempting a cheeky shot toward fine leg, with Dhoni taking a good catch behind the stumps.

Two overs later, half the Delhi side was back in the hut with Ben Rohrer fell to a soft dismissal, giving a regulation catch to Ashwin at square leg. Delhi limped to 65 for five at the half-way stage, needing 104 to win from the remaining ten overs.

Warner was still not in the mood to give up. He and Roelof van der Merwe began a late fight back. The duo added 39 runs for the six wickets but Ashwin came back to stop them in their tracks. Van der Merwe failed to pick up Ashwin’s doosra and went for a big heave and ended up skying the ball to Suresh Raina at long-on.

Warner’s continue to wage a lone battle, with Delhi still needing 66 from the last five overs. He and Irfan Pathan managed seven runs in the 16th over but Delhi’s chances were all but over when Warner hit one straight down Vijay’s throat at deep square leg. Warner will be disappointed for failing to put away a juicy length delivery. He went down after a fighting 44 from 37 deliveries.

Umesh Yadav turned a few heads with a big straight six to keep an optimistic Delhi fan’s hopes alive but Bravo dismissed Pathan and Ashish Nehra in two deliveries put an effective end to Delhi’s chances in the 18th over.

Delhi’s innings ended at 135 for nine, losing the game by 33 runs.
