Controversy ridden Rajasthan Royals showed incredible focus to limit Sunrisers Hyderabad to 136 in their Indian Premier League (IPL), 2013 encounter at Hyderabad.

Rajasthan made early inroads, before Biplab Samantray‘s fifty resurrected Hyderabad’s charge. James Faulkner bagged his second five wicket haul of the season.

Cameron White won the toss and elected to bat first. Hyderabad were playing the same side that played the previous game, whereas Sachin Baby and Siddharth Trivedi came in for Rajasthan.

In a surprising move, Dravid opened the bowling with Brad Hodge, whose gentle off-spinners conceded only two runs. Hyderabad’s batting has generally been shaky this season and that continued into this game.

Faulkner bowled Parthiv Patel and had Shikhar Dhawan caught at point in the second over. Cameron White was out first ball as Shane Watson induced the error in the next over. Rajasthan were off and running.

The young Hanuma Vihari and Biplab Samantray had the tough task of rebuilding the innings. It was slow going as Hyderabad finished the powerplay on 21 for three. The duo continued to take the singles and doubles as the boundaries dried up. In the first ten overs, they had struck only three fours, all coming off Samantray’s bat.

Vihari fell soon after the half-way mark and Darren Sammy entered the field. The West Indian all-rounder was pro-active at the crease and tried to up the ante. Samantray also accelerated as he hit Hyderabad’s first six in the 14th over. Sammy then smashed his first maximum in the 15th with a huge heave over mid-wicket off Shane Watson.

Samantray continued to fight even as Sammy was dismissed. He got to his fifty off 43 balls. He fell trying to clear the ground in the 19th over. Faulkner came back into the attack to limit the damage and complete his five-wicket haul.

Hyderabad have to defend the total. They need a victory to strengthen their chances for qualification to the play-offs.

Brief scores:

Sunrisers Hyderabad 136 for 9 in 20 overs (Biplab Samantray 55, Darren Sammy 23; James Faulkner 5 for 16, Shane Watson 1 for 19) vs Rajasthan Royals.
