Bangalore: May 14, 2013

KXIP: 176/3 | Overs 18.1 | Gilchrist 85*, Sathish 12* (KXIP win by 7 wickets)

Sathish finishes it with a boundary! What a performance from the visitors. Adam Gilchrist finally struck form to guide his side home, with very good support from Azhar Mahmood. This keeps KXIP in the mix while RCB now have to rely on results of the other sides. They are on same points as Sunrisers Hyderabad with an extra match.

KXIP: 172/3 | Overs 18 | Gilchrist 85*, Sathish 8*

Vinay Kumar comes to bowl with the visitors needing just 13 from 18 deliveries and bowls a short delivery to Sathish who pulls it for a six. Punjab just three runs away from victory here.

KXIP: 162/3 | Overs 17 | Gilchrist 83*, Sathish 0*  OUT! Miller 2 (4)

Gilchrist is coming alive here! He slams Muralitharan for two back-to-back sixes to bring the asking rate below six runs per over. Muralitharan gets something to smile about as his deliveries goes through Miller’s defense to hit the stumps. 14 runs and a wicket from the over.

KXIP: 148/2 | Overs 16 | Gilchrist 70* OUT! Mahmood 61 (41)

Azhar Mahmood is gone! But he goes after putting his side in an extremely comfortable position to take this game. He has holed one out to AB de Villiers after making 61 off just 41 deliveries. David Miller walks out in a much simpler situation when compared to the last fixture between these two sides.

KXIP: 140/1 | Overs 15 | Gilchrist 65*, Mahmood 59*

If Gilchrist can do it, so can Azhar Mahmood! He gets to his fifty with a huge six over Muralitharan. Gilchrist gets another shot over the bowler to the boundary. He top-edges a ball which falls in no-man’s land behind the keeper as the batsmen steal a single. Mahmood gets another boundary down the wicket. Punjab are marching away with the game here. 17 runs from the over. Punjab need 35 to win from 30 balls.

KXIP: 123/1 | Overs 14 | Gilchrist 60*, Mahmood 47*

Adam Gilchrist reaches his half-century! With a straight six over Zaheer Khan. He has turned his initial form around to lead his side in a crucial tie. He would want to take it all the way here. Zaheer bowls a lovely inswinging yorker to Gilchrist who just about keeps that out. It was very close to what he bowled to Andrew Strauss in the ICC World Cup 2011. Gilchrist ends the over with a boundary through covers. A big over for Punjab. 12 runs from it.

KXIP: 111/1 | Overs 13 | Gilchrist 49*, Mahmood 46*

A good over for the batting side here! Gilchrist plays his trademark pull shot to the boundary. A couple of years ago, that would have been in the stands. He will not complain though. Azhar Mahmood moves outside leg-stump and hits another boundary. This is a vintage innings in more than one way.

KXIP: 99/1 | Overs 12 | Gilchrist 43*, Mahmood 40*

Azhar Mahmood starts the over with a boundary but Vinay Kumar gives only five more runs away. Nine runs from the over. 76 runs required from the last eight overs.

KXIP: 90/1 | Overs 11 | Gilchrist 41*, Mahmood 33*

Adam Gilchrist sweeps Muralitharan for a four and we haven’t travelled back in time. 11 runs come from the over. Punjab need 85 runs from the last 54 deliveries.

KXIP: 79/1 | Overs 10 | Gilchrist 37*, Mahmood 28*

A tidy over from Vinay Kumar, just three runs from it.

KXIP: 76/1 | Overs 9 | Gilchrist 36*, Mahmood 26*

Gilchrist is taking the attack to the Bangalore bowlers! It is nothing close to a Gayle-like carnage but its enough to keep Punjab in the hunt for a win. He hits Unadkat for two boundaries. Mahmood also gets into the act to hit a boundary on the offside. 15 runs from the over.

KXIP: 61/1 | Overs 8 | Gilchrist 28*, Mahmood 20*

Vinay Kumar comes into the attack. He tries to play on Adam Gilchrist’s mind by coming around the wicket but Gilchrist slams him for a boundary. 10 runs from the over.

KXIP: 51/1 | Overs 7 | Gilchrist 21*, Mahmood 18*

Adam Gilchrist survives an LBW appeal! That looked MIGHTY close! Gilchrist comes forward and the ball hit him on line. Lifeline for the Punjab captain. Five runs from the over.

KXIP: 46/1 | Overs 6 | Gilchrist 20*, Mahmood 15*

Azhar Mahmood goes after Henriques! After two boundaries over deep midwicket and follows it up with a hoick over infield for a boundary through long-off. A productive over for the visitors, 13 runs from it.

KXIP: 33/1 | Overs 5 | Gilchrist 20*, Mahmood 2*

Adam Gilchrist mistimes a pull off Zaheer Khan on the fourth ball of the over, which falls safely onto the ground after clearing the short midwicket fielder. Only six runs come off from that over.

KXIP: 27/1 | Overs 4 | Gilchrist 15*, Mahmood 0*

Jaydev Unadkat comes on and bowls a good line and length. He is still fresh from his five-for against the Delhi Daredevils. He gives just three runs away.

KXIP: 24/1 | Overs 3 | Gilchrist 12*, Mahmood 0*  OUT! Marsh 8 (4)

Marsh times a ball on his legstump to perfection to guide it to the deep square leg boundary but Zaheer strikes in the very next ball! He knocks his offstump out of the ground. Azhar Mahmood walks out at number three. Five runs from the over.

KXIP: 19/0 | Overs 2 | Gilchrist 12*, Marsh 4*

Moises Henriques shares the new ball with Zaheer and starts off well. He is a big unlucky as Gilchrist sees width and slashes hard, only for the ball to fly over the slip fielder to the thirdman boundary. Marsh complements him well with a shot that could not have been hit straighter. 12 runs come from the over.

KXIP: 7/0 | Overs 1 | Gilchrist 5*, Marsh 0*

Adam Gilchrist looks like he wants to cut loose today. He plays a typical powerful drive only to be saved by AB de Villiers at covers but he is looking positive for the first time in the tournament. The next delivery he manages to pierce the offside field for a boundary. Zaheer Khan concedes only seven runs in what is his over since December 2012.

RCB: 174/5 | Overs 20 | Henriques 0 (1)  OUT! Kohli 58 (43), Rahul 8 (4)

Azhar Mahmood dismisses Virat Kohli. Kohli tries a peculiar reverse sweep but the ball hit him on the boot. Lokesh Rahul comes out and hits a four of the first delivery. He slams another boundary as he finds the gap between deep point and long off. Mandeep Singh takes a good catch off the last ball to finish the RCB innings at 174 for five. This is good stuff from the home side. Gayle and Kohli’s rebuilding and consolidation has reaped rewards.

RCB: 165/3 | Overs 19 |  Kohli 56*  OUT! Gayle 77 (53), AB de Villers 6 (2)

Parvinder Awana bowls a ‘Waqar Younis to Brian Lara’ kind of a yorker to find the big man lying on the ground. Only, it doesn’t hit the stumps. The next ball, however, is a full toss outside the offstump which is dispatched for a big six. The next ball is a peach of a delivery, breaking the offstump into two pieces to send back Gayle for 77. AB de Villers comes out and smacks a six off his first delivery but a cheeky attempt to walk across and play it behind square goes in vain as the ball crashes on to the middle and leg stump.

RCB: 150/1 | Overs 18 | Gayle 71*, Kohli 55*

Sandeep Sharma starts off with a no-ball! And another freehit delivery to Gayle who can only hit the ball in the air. He makes up for that with a four and a six off the next two deliveries. At this rate, he seems set to make up for the sedate start to his innings. His skipper, meanwhile, bring up a fifty with a good boundary to deep mid wicket. 20 runs from the over.

RCB: 131/1 | Overs 17 | Gayle 59*, Kohli 49*

Azhar Mahmood comes back in to the attack! He gets VIrat Kohli to hit the ball to the fielder in the deep but replays suggest a no-ball.  Mahmood bowls his freehit delivery to Gayle and gets away with it. Despite that, Mahmood gives only five runs from it.

RCB: 126/1 | Overs 16 | Gayle 57*, Kohli 47*

Only a single conceded off the first ball to take Galye off strike. However, Kohli joins the act with a six and a boundary. 15 runs scored in the 16th over.

RCB: 111/1 | Overs 15 | Gayle 55*, Kohli 34*

Out of nowhere Gayle has a fifty! He hits Manpreet Gony for three consecutive sixes. Gony will feel a tad unlucky to face the brunt of Gayle blitz this late in the innings. The first six was over long on, the second one off the bottom of the bat over deep midwicket and the third one a mighty heave over long off. 22 runs from the over.

RCB: 89/1 | Overs 14 | Gayle 34*, Kohli 34*

Virat Kohli guides the first ball past the third man fielder off the first delivery. Meanwhile, Gayle is freeing his arms in installments. He hits a boundary but the run rate is still very low by RCB’s standards.

RCB: 79/1 | Overs 13 | Gayle 29*, Kohli 29*

Gayle finally goes after the bowling! He hits a BIG six over long on. Siddharth Mallya will have a tear in his eyes. Gony mixes up his speed to make a good comeback. 10 runs from the over.

RCB: 69/1 | Overs 12 | Gayle 22*, Kohli 28*

Thats the first SIX! But Gayle can only watch it sail from the other end as it goes off Kohli’s bat. Kohli comes down the track and hits it over long off. The duo collect five more runs.

RCB: 58/1 | Overs 11 | Gayle 18*, Kohli 21*

There is still no acceleration from Gayle. Kohli scores a boundary from the first ball but only two more singles were taken after it. Gilchrist will be a happy skipper at the moment.

RCB: 52/1 | Overs 10 | Gayle 17*, Kohli 16*

Piyush Chawla comes back and bowls another tight over. Gayle seems like someone has hit him with a tranquiliser. Only three singles come from the over. Bangalore manage 52 for one at the half-way stage.

RCB: 49/1 | Overs 9 | Gayle 16*, Kohli 14*

Gayle is starting to flex his muscles. He flicks a ball between the ‘keeper and short fine leg. Nine runs from the over.

RCB: 40/1 | Overs 8 | Gayle 10*, Kohli 11*

Piyush Chawla comes on and troubles Gayle. He beats his bat with a couple of leg spinners and then bowls a quicker delivery that beats Gayle’s bat again. Excellent start for Chawla. Just three runs from the over.

RCB: 37/1 | Overs 7 | Gayle 9*, Kohli 9*

Chris Gayle survives an LBW appeal! That looked mighty close but the umpire gives the big man the benefit of the doubt. He takes the opportunity with both hands and slams the first boundary of his innings. A poor delivery from Awana, giving Gayle enough time to smash it through point. Six runs come from the over.

RCB: 31/1 | Overs 6 | Gayle 4*, Kohli 8*

The powerplay is done and Gayle is yet to go after the bowling. This is turning out to be good for the visitors. Meanwhile, Kohli ends the over with a lovely wristy flick to the deep squareleg boundary.

RCB: 26/1 | Overs 5 | Gayle 3* OUT! Pujara 19 (20)

Pujara is gone! He plays the ball straight into the hands of David Miller at point. This is a wonderful start for the visitors. Virat Kohli comes out and plays a graceful cover drive to the boundary. This track is acting up. The penultimate ball kept low and Gilchrist took it on a couple of bounces. A good over, wicket and just four runs from it.

RCB: 22/0 | Overs 4 | Pujara 19*, Gayle 3*

Pujara continues to get that one boundary per over.  But Azhar Mahmood has only three more runs to give away.

RCB: 15/0 | Overs 3 | Pujara 13*, Gayle 2*

Another tight over here. Punjab are doing well with their line and length. Only three runs from Mahmood’s second over.

RCB: 12/0 | Overs 2 | Pujara 11*, Gayle 1*

Pujara’s flourish continues. He welcomes Sandeep Sharma with a flick through midwicket. Sandeep Sharma does well to give only one run away and squaring up Gayle in the last ball. Gayle still seems in the slumber from the previous game.

RCB: 7/0 | Overs 1 | Pujara 6*, Gayle 1*

Azhar Mahmood starts well. Pujara hits him for a boundary through point but he is bang on target while bowling to Gayle, not giving him any width. It’s a big crowd at the M Chinaswamy stadium with a lot of wannabe Bangladesh Royal Challengers Bangalore’s green flags. Seven runs from the first over.
