Rajasthan Royals jump to the top of the Indian Premier League (IPL) points table with their thumping 87-run win over the Mumbai Indians, who slip to fourth.

So, that’s the end of pretty much a snorefest of a match at Jaipur, at least in the second innings. Mumbai Indians failed to set off ever since they lost Sachin Tendulkar in the first over. Loose shots and bad timing was the culprit. Rajasthan, meanwhile, did everything right from Ball One. This win would do their net-run rate a world of good. Well, that’s it from me. Mumbai Indians have slipped to their biggest defeat ever in the Indian Premier League(IPL) as Rajasthan Royals crush them by 87 runs. The previous record was by 76 runs against KKR in 2011.

Mitchell Johnson drags James Faulkner onto the stumps to give the Royals their eighth wicket. Wicket maiden.

Mumbai Indians get a couple more boundaries in that may not effect the result of this match, but could come in handy at the end of the tournament when net run-rate is calculated. MI should ideally look to bat out the 20 overs.

Mitchell Johnson gets off the mark with a boundary by flicking Siddharth Trivedi off his hips towards deep mid-wicket. Too little, too late for Mumbai. The required rate is now 21.80.

Rishi Dhawan goes for a duck as Mumbai slide further towards a huge defeat. Dhawan tries to flick Stuart Binny past mid-wicket, but finds James Faulkner. Ambati Rayudu then flicks the ball towards square leg and sets off for the single, but new man in Harbhajan Singh is not interested at all! Rayudu reaches the non-striker’s end as Rahul Dravid gets the ball through to the keeper who completes a simple run out. There’s an argument between the batsmen as to who is out; neither wants to go. The third umpire is consulted to see who’s bat was grounded last and as it turned out, it was Bhajji’s. Fruitless drama!

It was bound to happen sooner than later. Mumbai’s run-rate had surged over 15 and it was only a matter of time before the batsmen entered the desperation mode and went for the shots. Dinesh Karthik, Mumbai’s best batsman in this tournament, gives James Faulkner the charge, trying to hit him over long on, but can only find the safe hands of Brad Hodge. Surely, no way back for Mumbai now.

Kevon Cooper comes in and the Mumbai Indians guide him around the park for singles and twos. That’s definitely not going to be enough. The required run rate is now 15.38.

Mumbai Indians batsmen don’t seem to be connecting with anything here. Nothing has gone right for the visitors. Dinesh Karthik manages pulls Siddharth Trivedi to the deep mid-wicket fence for four to end the over.

Another great over for Rajasthan and Mumbai have just scored 42 runs in the first 10 overs. They need to get 138 off the next 10.

Siddharth Trivedi comes back and bowls another miserly over, giving just four runs. The required run-rate for Mumbai is now almost 13 as we take the first Strategic Timeout of the innings. Mumbai have a lot of things to ponder over.

Stuart Binny knocks down Kieron Pollard’s middle stump as the West Indianc completely misses the line of the ball trying to flick it down the leg. Ambati Rayudu then edges Binny past a vacant first slip to get a boundary. At 31 for four, there should have been a fielder there. Is there any way back for Mumbai here?
 

MI 26/3 | Overs 7 | Karthik 14*, Pollard 0* OUT! Rohit 2(7)

Mumbai Indians lose their third wicket and this time it’s Rohit Sharma’s turn to walk back early. Siddharth Trivedi bowls short as Rohit tries to whack it wide of Shane Watson at mid-wicket. Rohit does not connect and hits it straight to the Australian who happily latches on. Trivedi bowls a wicket maiden and MI are in big trouble!

Ankeet Chavan comes back for a third over and bowls beautifully, giving away just two runs. Mumbai have scored only 26 runs in the six overs of mandatory fielding restrictions. Rajastjan were 58 fo no loss at this stage.

Dinesh Karthik welcomes James Faulkner into the attack with a straight swat past the umpire for four. You can safely say that Mumbai’s chase rests on his shoulders.

Dinesh Karthik gets the first boundary for the Mumbai Indians by lifting Ankeet Chavan to the vacant long on fence. Mumbai need many more like these today.

Mumbai Indians seem intent on throwing this match away. After Sachin Tendulkar, it is Ricky Ponting ‘s turn to depart as he gifts a soft catch back to Ajit Chandila. DK and Rohit Sharma have it all to do again.

Ajit Chandila has taken the big wicket! Sachin Tendulkar goes for the sweep against the spinner and gets the top edge that loops up straight to Siddharth Trivedi at short fine leg.
 

So, Ajinkya Rahane has carried his bat again for the Rajasthan Royals and helped them post a very competitive total of 179 for three for the Mumbai Indians to chase. The last time Mumbai batted second in this year’s IPL was their opening game, where they failed to chase 156 against the other Royals from Bangalore. Join us in a bit for the chase.

Brad Hodge carts Mitchell Johnson for six over deep square-leg to get the last over running for the Royals, before Ajinkya Rahane hits him for consecutive boundaries to extra cover and deep mid-wicket. A dot ball follows off the penultimate delivery before Rahane steps out and guides Johnson’s slower delivery to the deep point fence. Johnson, who bowled so well in his first three overs, conceded 19 in his last over to end with figures of 4-0-41-0. Mumbai Indians need 180 to win.

Brad Hodge skies Lasith Malinga and it should have been a simple catch at mid-off, but Sachin Tendulkar and Malinga both converge under it, and in the end both drop out of it. Mumbai Indians haven’t had a good day in the field.

Ajinkya Rahane gets to his half-century off 48 balls as me move into the last two overs. He’s played his typical anchor innings and celebrates the fifty with a cheeky reverse sweep between point and short fine-leg.

Brad Hodge gets the slog sweep going against Harbhajan Singh and that’s outta here! The ball sails into the stands behind the deep mid-wicket fence. Six more runs are scored in the over and the Royals are on their way to 170-plus.
 

RR 132/3 | Overs 16 | Rahane 45*, Hodge 4* OUT! Binny 4(4)

Ajinkya Rahane gets an inside edge towards fine leg and wants two. Stuart Binny isn’t interested in the second, but is forced into the run after Rahane almost reaches his end. Mitchell Johnson picks up the bowl and gets a clean throw to bolwer Pragyan Ojha who whips of the stumps with Binny a few yards short. Things starting to fall apart for the home team.
 

RR 125/2 | Overs 15 | Rahane 43*, Binny 4*

Mitchell Johnson comes back into the attack and almost gets Ajinkya Rahane caught at extra cover, but Ambati Rayudu fails to get his hands underneath it after running a mile. This is a good comeback from Mumbai. If they can keep the Royals under 160, they would be very pleased.

Dishant Yagnik tries a reverse-lift over short third man, but finds Sachin Tendulkar stationed on the circle. Tendulkar almost loses the ball in the floodlights, but manages to latch on. Another tidy over for Mumbai, three runs and a wicket.

Lasith Malinga goes for just five runs this time after his previous two overs yielded 20 runs. The Royals, in a moment of panick after a surprisingly tidy over, have called for the second Strategic Timeout.
 

RR 109/1 | Overs 12 | Rahane 35*, Yagnik 32*

Dishant Yagnik gets a slick cut in to the deep point boundary off Rish Dhawan’s second over. The pressure is palpable straight away as Dhawan bowls two consecutive no-balls by over-stepping. Luckily, the Royals fail to make good use of the freebies and get just one run off the bat. Dhawan concedes 13 in the over and it looks like it will be a while before we get to see him in the attack again.
 

RR 96/1 | Overs 11 | Rahane 34*, Yagnik 23*

Dishant Yagnik has already hit a couple of clean hits for four, but reserves his best for Harbhajan Singh as he brings out an elegant and effective sweep that dissects the leg side field on the way to the fence. The Royals are on their way to a huge total the way they are going.
 

RR 88/1 | Overs 10 | Rahane 32*, Yagnik 17*

Ajinkya Rahane cuts Kieron Pollard’s short and wide delivery to the deep point fence past a hapless Lasith Malinga, who should have put in more of an effort. He is the weak link in Mumbai’s fielding unit. Dishant Yagnik then targets Pollard and cleanly, yet powerfully, lifts him over the deep mid-wicket fence fir six. Pollard’s over goes from bad to worse as he offers oodles of width to the left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman that is dispatched to the deep point boundary. Pollard can do nothing more than have his arms behind his head.
 

RR 72/1 | Overs 9 | Rahane 27*, Yagnik 7*

Harbhajan Singh comes into the attack and bowls another tidy over. Mumbai are slowly clawing their way back with the fall of Shane Watson, but still have nine more wickets to go.
 

RR 69/1 | Overs 8 | Rahane 25*, Yagnik 6* OUT! Watson 31(25)

Kieron Pollard comes into the attack and strikes straight away! The big Trinidadian bowls one of his trademark long balls from way behind the umpire and Shane Watson looks to cut it to third man, but gets a thick edge as Dinesh Karthik flies to his right and plucks the catch.
 

RR 61/0 | Overs 7 | Watson 31*, Rahane 24*

The Strategic Timeout works for Mumbai as Pragyan Ojha bowls a tight over, giving away just three runs.
 

RR 58/0 | Overs 6 | Watson 30*, Rahane 22*

Lasith Malinga comes back in a bid to contain the run flow but ends up getting hit for 16 runs. Shane Watson targets the ‘V’ first and gets boundaries on either arm down long on and long off. Malinga then drifts down the leg trying for the yorker and Watson merely flicks it for four to fine leg. Watson isn’t done yet and plays the shot of the innings so far — a glorious straight drive off a fullish delivery that darted to the fence. Yes, you can now call this a flier!

Mumbai Indians immediately call for a Strategic Time out.
 

RR 42/0 | Overs 5 | Watson 18*, Rahane 22*

Pragyan Ojha replaces Mitchell Johnson. The Indian left-arm spinner strays outside leg stump once too many and Shane Watson sweeps him for four to the fine leg fence. Ajinkya Rahane then takes over and lifts his compatriot over long on for the second maximum of the innings. You can’t call this a flier, but it’s a really good start for Rajasthan.
 

RR 29/0 | Overs 4 | Watson 13*, Rahane 15*

Shane Watson is one of the most compulsive pullers of the cricket ball and murders anything that is short. He does exactly that as young Rishi Dhawan replaces Lasith Malinga in the attack and invites the Australian to go for his favourite shot. The ball sails over deep mid-wicket for the first six of the innings.
 

RR 22/0 | Overs 3 | Watson 6*, Rahane 15*

There’s an interesting battle ensuing between the two Australians who are in opposite teams today. Mitchell Johnson is troubling his compatriot Shane Watson and has beaten his edge twice by a few millimetres. Watson does get a boundary chasing a widish delivery that flies wide of the two slips. Ajinkya Rahane then gets another boundary via a lucky French cut that whisks past the stumps.
 

RR 11/0 | Overs 2 | Watson 1*, Rahane 9*

Ajinkya Rahane cracks the first boundary and what a shot that was! Lasith Malinga offers width and bangs it in short, and Rahane merely punches it between point and cover on the backfoot. Malinga offers almost a carbon copy later in the over, and this time Rahane pulls it for four more to the deep mid-wicket fence.
 

RR 3/0 | Overs 1 | Watson 1*, Rahane 1*

Mitchell Johnson bowls a good first over for Mumbai Indians. There was a close leg-before call on the last ball but the ball was just missing leg stump, reckons the umpire. Shane Watson survives.

Rajasthan Royals skipper Rahul Dravid has won the toss against the Mumbai Indians and has decided to put his team to bat first.

In team changes, Ankeet Chavan replaces S Sreesanth, who does not want to come face-to-face with Harbhajan Singh. Dishant Yagnik also replaces Sanju Samson for the Royals, as informed by Dravid at the toss.

The Mumbai Indians, meanwhile, are unchanged. And why not, the way they are playing!

Mumbai Indians would be favourites for the match, given their form this season where they have won three out of four games. Two of those wins have been crushing victories over Delhi Daredevils and Pune Warriors. But if there’s ever a team that’s capable of pulling off an upset, it’s the Royals. Plus, they are playing at home.
