Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) defeated Gujarat Lions (GL) by 8 wickets in match 53 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017 to become the second team to qualify for the playoffs. GL, playing their last game in IPL, started off superbly by adding 111 runs for the first wicket. Nonetheless, Mohammad Siraj ensured his side’s comeback with subtle variations and scalped a 4-for to restrict GL for 154. In reply, David Warner and Vijay Shankar’s unbeaten 133-run stand for the third wicket ensured the side a playoff berth. Full Cricket Scorecard, Gujarat Lions vs Sunrisers Hyderabad, IPL 2017, Match 53

In the post-match conference, Warner was in full praise of his Indian seamers and revealed what they were talking about when Ishan Kishan and Dwayne Smith were on the attacking mode. “It would have been a shame to miss out on the playoffs. We tried to communicate after the first wicket. When we lost couple of wickets we realised the wicket was slowing up. Credit to Siraj for the way he bowled. India have got some brilliant pace bowling names.. from Bumrahs to Bhuvis to Ishants, the list just goes on”, stated the captain.

Warner concluded by saying, “I think it is all about batting around to each other. To have the luxury to have guys come and rotate strike in the middle overs. We are very happy. With the way this wicket was, we knew this was going to be tough as the ball got older. Obviously we are not worrying about the next few games. We will take one game at a time. Thanks to all the people who came out to watch the last couple of games.”

Warner remained unbeaten with a 52-ball 69 and led from the front. His side will like to bring up their A game in the knockouts to defend the title.
