In the 37th match of 10th edition of Indian Premier League (IPL), table-toppers Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) were thrashed by defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Uppal, Hyderabad on Sunday. The foundation of the victory was laid by none other than SRH skipper David Warner, who played a maverick knock of 59-ball 126, including 10 fours and 8 sixes. Following KKR’s defeat by 48 runs against SRH, pacer Umesh Yadav opened up on the reason behind their disastrous loss. In the post-match press conference, Umesh started by accepting the fact that KKR leaked too many runs. Full Cricket Scorecard, SRH vs KKR, Match 37

“I think it’s too many runs. Everyone has given so many runs. We did not get early wickets. Because of that, we lost. In IPL, you need early wickets,” said Umesh. He further complimented Warner’s brilliant hundred by saying, “He (Warner) played beautifully. He used all the chances and got a hundred. He is a good batsman. He made many centuries in the ODIs and Tests also. He is a world-class batsman. It’s a beautiful innings from him.”

KKR’s main spinner Sunil Narine conceded 37 from three overs. Defending Narine, Umesh added, “It can happen to anybody. It can happen with me. I have also given 50 runs in four overs. It’s difficult when someone is hitting properly and someone is striking good. It can happen to anybody. It can happen to Malinga also tomorrow. The situation the team is in at present, we need someone who can hit the ball properly. I think Sunil had that confidence. That’s why he is opening the innings,” he said.”

Umesh then also defended Chris Woakes, who dropped Warner’s catch in the 10th over and also agreed that the catch could have turned the game in KKR’s favour as well. “Had Woakes taken that catch, match would have gone somewhere else. The 30-40 runs that had gone in excess, they could have been avoided. Woakes is a world-class fielder and bowler. He had taken such good catches. Sometimes, it happens. It can happen with me as well. He tried. The coordination that is required, may be that did not work and that is why the catch was dropped. But, it happens in cricket,” he said.
