Kane Williamson was adjudged Man of the Match for his 51-ball 89 vs DD BCCI

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) s victory was not just contributed by the bowlers but also by the comeback-man Kane Williamson, who played classy textbook shots coupled with some innovative strokes. Williamson s 51-ball 89 rewarded him with the Man of the Match award, with the game on Wednesday night being his first match of IPL 2017. He also put up a century-stand along with Shikhar Dhawan, who got to his fifty. Williamson was not only elated to contribute to the team s victory but also cheekily wished that he could smack the ball like Chris Gayle did. Gayle during Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) match against Gujarat Lions (GL) not only surpassed 10,000 runs in T20 cricket but also played a match-winning innings of 38-ball 77 for which he was adjudged the Man of the Match. Speaking to iplt20 in post-match press conference, Williamson firstly took through his match-winning innings and his partnership with Dhawan, It is all about playing the situation to the best you can. ShikharDhawan was superb and the way he crafted in the middle overs and picked up the strike-rate towards the end was brilliant. Our partnership helped the team to put up a big score. We knew that there was a lot of firepower in the hut. I think the way Shikhar played – having a higher strike-rate than me, allowed me to get in, take my time and then tee off. T20 is very fickle in its nature, so you are fortunate that some of your risks do come off.

Williamson was benched for almost 5 games and on his return he smashed a fifty. Williamson was rather unfazed on sitting out and considered it as a challenge, Sitting on the bench for the first few games is part and parcel, and the guys (who got a chance to play) were doing a fantastic job. Being on the sidelines you are always practising to be as ready as you can for your first game. It has to do a lot with the mental shift from the other formats that we have been playing. That is the challenge.

While speaking on his playing style, Williamson did not shy away from mentioning his wish of smashing the ball like Gayle, I wish I could smack a few like Chris Gayle (laughs), but unfortunately not to be. I think it is about adapting to the best of your abilities and playing around with your strong points. There are some incredible players that can whack it 120 meters. I do practice hard in the nets to hit the ball long, but probably it is not in my genetic make-up to do that. So, I try and find a different way.
