In 34 games of the ongoing edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, there was no Super-Over. Nonetheless, come match 35, we witnessed a nerve-wrecking clash between Gujarat Lions (GL) and Mumbai Indians (MI) at Rajkot. The first Super-Over in IPL since 2014. Opting to bat, GL posted a modest score of 153 for 8 coming on the back of contributions from Ishan Kishan, Ravindra Jadeja and Andrew Tye. The total never looked challenging with the kind of form MI were in, apart from their pleasant record while chasing. However with 11 needed off 6 balls, Irfan Pathan took charge of the last over and pushed the game to the first Super Over of IPL 10. IPL 2017: Krunal Pandya terms Mumbai Indians' win over Gujarat Lions as one of his best games

Pathan, who was unsold in IPL auction and was recently picked by GL, made his first appearance in the tenth edition and was clearly out of sorts till the last over redeemed some pride. In the penultimate over, he had contributed to a brilliant stop at fine-leg, followed by a direct hit that led to a run out. Contributing with only 2 runs, Pathan came to bowl in the third over and went for 16 runs. Parthiv Patel, 70 off 44 balls, hammered him to all parts of the ground but the all-rounder was entrusted with the last-over duties with MI reeling at 143 for 8. His first ball was full and in the arc for a well-set Krunal Pandya to smack him straight down the ground for a six.

The next delivery conceded a single and brought Jasprit Bumrah in the middle. Bumrah tapped the ball towards point and sneaked in for a quick single only to be run-out by Jadeja's bang-on throw. The drama intensified at Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium as Lasith Malinga walked in as the last man. Krunal maintained strike for the next two balls before leaving Malinga to score the winning run off the last delivery.

Pathan attempted a yorker and it hit Malinga's boots and hurled away towards point. The batsmen ran hard for a single, but were outplayed by another bullet-throw from Jadeja. In this way, GL held one to the match and initiated an eliminator. Pathan and Jadeja were instrumental with the scores being levelled despite 40 overs of play.

However, all their efforts were curbed by Bumrah's excellence. He held his nerves and defended 12 runs in the one-over eliminator to earn two vital points for MI on Saturday. Bowling to the explosive duo of Aaron Finch and Brendon McCullum, Bumrah conceded only 6 runs, out of which 4 were runs scored off the bat.

MI are currently in the second spot whereas GL are standing at the fifth position in the points table.
