The 10th edition of the cash-rich and much hyped Twenty20 (T20) league in the world, the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2017, is all set to get underway from April 5. The defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) would be kicking things off in the 10th season, with the opening game against runner-up from the previous season Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. Given last year’s champions were from Hyderabad, the opening ceremony, along with the final match of the 10th edition will also be hosted by Hyderabad. The IPL has undoubtedly been the marquee domestic T20 league in the world, ever since its inception in 2008, as the first edition of the league was won by now suspended franchise Rajasthan Royals (RR), under the leadership of Australian spin legend Shane Warne. Post the first season, it has continued to gain immense popularity all around the world. It was evident when the 2009 edition was held in South Africa, which again drew major crowds across all the eight venues in the nation. The league has seen a number of winners, while the three most successful sides in the tournament are now suspended franchise Chennai Super Kings (CSK), Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Mumbai Indians (MI), who all have won the league for record two times. As said above, the teams in the form of RR and CSK have been suspended since the past two seasons owing to corruption issues by the team owners. As as result, a couple of new teams in the form of Gujarat Lions (GL) and Rising Pune Supergiant (RPS) were introduced, while the players from the suspended sides were put up for auction. The schedule of the upcoming 10th edition of the league was announced by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on February 15, while there were three changes made in the schedule later on March 20 for DD. The full revised schedule of the tournament is given below:

Despite the immense success and popularity all over the world, the tournament continues to draw certain criticism as few consider that the format is affect Test cricket, the traditional form of the game. However, despite the criticisms, the tournament does not fail to impress any season and is enjoyed by millions of viewers around the world. It would be interesting to see if it lives up to the expectations this season and its eventually champion.
