Rohit was placed at the helm in 2013 when he replaced Ricky Ponting midway through the tournament. He led MI to their maiden IPL title. In the same year, MI also lifted the Champions League T20. All the same, Rohit seemed to struggle in 2015, with MI emerging victorious only once in their first 6 games. However, they staged a stunning comeback and won their second title. Rohit was adjudged Man of the Match for his match-winning fifty in the final.

Malinga has missed the inaugural edition of IPL due to a knee injury. Had he participated, he would have become only the second overseas cricketer to have played for the same franchise since its inception. However, in 2011 he had won the Purple Cap. And in 2015, he picked up 24 wickets, losing the Purple Cap by two wickets. He is the leading wicket-taker in the history of IPL.

Others players who have played over 100 matches for MI are Harbhajan Singh, Kieron Pollard, and Ambati Rayudu.
