On Wednesday, Gautam Gambhir stepped down as Delhi Daredevils (DD) captain. Shreyas Iyer was handed over the duties. Iyer’s first test was against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday and the cricketer secured second victory for DD in VIVO IPL 2018 with much ease. His 40-ball 93 was the highlight of the game. Prithvi Shaw and Colin Munro first registered 59-run stand between them to get the ball rolling. The the momentum was carried forward by Iyer and Maxwell to add the finishing touches.
All this happened without the presence of the Gambhir who was ‘dropped’ from the side. At least that is how the cricket aficionados considered it to be like. However, Iyer during the post-match press conference, clarified that Gambhir was not dropped but decided to keep himself out of the game that has left Iyer in awe of him: “I didn’t make any call to be honest. It wasn’t my decision to drop him. He himself decided to sit out, which was really courageous decision with him being the captain in the previous matches. The respect for him has gone really high. It’s really [good to] see when a captain, if he’s not playing well, he backs out. Colin [Munro] came in and gave us the desired start.”
Iyer believes a good start made the difference for DD: “It’s just that we got a good start. Everyone was aware of what they had to do and contributed really well. It was a team effort. It wasn’t an individual game. Everyone stepped up to the mark and started taking responsibility.”
Despite a win to their name, DD are placed on the seventh spot. DD will need to win the next six games from seven if they see themselves making it to the playoffs.
