In the inaugural edition of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2007, Gautam Gambhir opened his account playing for his home team, Delhi Daredevils (DD). He, however, shifted base to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) who were struggling to live upto expectations in the opening seasons. Nonetheless, the tides changed significantly for the franchise. While KKR’s title track Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo re (Karenge, Ladenge, Jeetenge) seemed insignificant till 2010 edition, Gambhir made it an instant hit with two title victories under his captaincy in 2012 and 2014 respectively. Since then, Gambhir has built a core side and led aggressively.

Ahead of IPL auctions 2018, Gambhir is yet to get in touch with KKR team management. According to the new rules, every franchise have to submit a list of (five) players for retention prior to the auction in January 2018. The signs do not look encouraging, and we may see Gambhir donning a new jersey in the eleventh season.

Ahead of Delhi’s Ranji Trophy 2017-18 final versus Vidarbha, Gambhir spoke about all possibilities.

“It is very surprising that I have not spoken to anyone (in KKR management). I don t know about myself (future with KKR). We ll probably sit and talk after the Ranji final. But yes I am (open to playing for any franchise). You have achieved so much for KKR. You have done whatever you could.

If things do not work out in future, the good part is that you are leaving a franchise on a good note, when it has become a successful franchise. Not when you were struggling. As a professional, you want different challenges. There is nothing wrong in it. That ll keep you motivated and hungry,” told Hindustan Times.

Gambhir sounded practical and is looking forward to building a new side in KKR (amidst several shuffling expected in auction). Nonetheless, he doesn’t mind shifting base and part ways on a good note.
