India’s U-19 speedster Shivam Mavi makes his debut for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in Match 10 of the ongoing VIVO IPL 2018 against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Saturday at Eden Gardens, Kolkata. Mavi impressed many with his performance in 2018 U-19 World Cup in New Zealand with his brisk pace and ability to swing the ball. As a result, he was roped in by KKR for INR 3 crores in the players auctions held in late January at Bengaluru.

Mavi scalped 9 wickets from 6 matches at 18.89 in the World Cup. He clocked 146 kph in almost every over. However, he will be aware of the challenge to retain the same intensity in a mega event like IPL. While cricketers like Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya have earned India caps through rollicking IPL performances, Mavi will want to replicate his seniors as well.

Mavi is yet to play domestic cricket (List A, First-Class or T20). In an interview with PTI, he expressed his thoughts: I will focus match by match and will take it as a stepping stone. Post-IPL, the main focus will be on domestic cricket. I am yet to make my debut in domestic cricket. IPL is an opportunity to grab limelight if you do well. It becomes easier from here on, if you do well here.

Will he make it big?

Mavi is excited to share the dressing room with Mitchell Johnson, Vinay Kumar and other pacers: I will try to learn a lot from them. It will obviously help me. Will he curb SRH’s winning streak on Saturday?
