Kolkata, who had won their first two games of the season, were pushed on the backfoot as the hometeam reduced the visitors to 61/5 by the end of 10 overs, with the likes of Nikhil Naik, Chris Lynn, Nitish Rana, Robin Uthappa and Shubman Gill back in the dugout.

However, Russell, who was the chief architect in Kolkata’s wins over Hyderabad and Punjab, once again played a pivotal role as he and Dinesh Karthik stitched a 95-run partnership. While the team was in trouble, Russell stuck to his tried and tested method of hitting big sixes and scoring at brisk pace and like many times before, it worked for the Jamaican.

The West Indian hammered 62 off 28 balls, hitting 6 sixes and 4 fours before being dismissed by Chris Morris in the 18th over.

Kolkata skipper, Karthik, meanwhile, scored 50 off 36 balls with the help of 5 fours and 2 sixes. While he could not stay till the end after being dismissed by Amit Mishra in the 19th over, his knock, along with Russell’s blitz, has now given Kolkata a chance to complete a hat-trick of wins.

Earlier, Delhi made as many as four changes to the playing XI with Harshal Patel, Chris Morris, Hanuma Vihari and Sandeep Lamichhane getting a look in. Kolkata, meanwhile, just made one change to the team with Nikhil Naik replacing injured Sunil Narine.
