Mumbai captain Rohit Sharma has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their Indian T20 League match against Punjab in Mohali on Saturday. (READ: Murugan’s  double, and an almost another umpiring controversy)

The offence is MI’s first of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences so Rohit has been fined INR 12 lakh.

Spinner Murugan Ashwin and batsmen – KL Rahul, Chris Gayle and Mayank Agarwal – starred as Punjab beat Mumbai by eight wickets in Mohali.

MI posted 176/7 thanks to a half-century from opener Quinton de Kock and a quickfire 19-ball 31 from allrounder Hardik Pandya. Murugan, who replaced Varun Chakravarthy in the playing XI, was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 2/25 from his four overs.

Chasing 177, Punjab made a watchful start. Jasprit Bumrah, who bowled that brilliant penultimate over against Bangalore and helped Mumbai register their first win of the season, kept things tight. While Chris Gayle attacked the other bowlers, Punjab could only score 38 runs in the Powerplay.

They eventually chased down the target with eight deliveries to spare. Opener KL Rahul overcame a slow start to his season, hitting a 57-ball 77 while Mayank Agarwal (43) and Chris Gayle (40) were the other significant contributors.
